OpportunityAre you a problem-solver and a trouble-shooter Do you like to work with your hands If this sounds like you and you’re interested in a life at sea, a career as a Marine Technician in the Naval Reserve might just be for you.Marine Technicians are continuously learning about technology and engineering practices so they can oversee marine systems engineering equipment on Naval ships. They play a key role in making sure warships can float, move and fight. No two days are ever the same.Serve with the Naval ReserveThis position is for part-time employment with the Naval Reserve at certain locations across Canada. Reserve Force members usually serve part-time at a Reserve Force Unit in their community and may serve while going to school or working at a civilian job. While Reserve Force members usually work on scheduled evenings and weekends, they may also serve in full-time positions at some units for fixed terms, depending on available opportunities.Naval Reservists are paid during their training. The opportunity to apply for courses, training and employment outside of their Reserve Division is based on availability, working around school schedules and employment. On-the-job training is usually conducted at the Reservist’s home unit, or at a unit in Halifax, NS, Victoria, BC, or Quebec City, QC. Reservists may also volunteer for deployment on a military mission within or outside Canada.Among the many benefits, the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve offers a competitive pension plan, dental insurance, and reimbursement for college or university courses during your career.OverviewMarine Technicians are responsible for operating all marine systems engineering equipment while onboard the ship. They troubleshoot problems, inform higher ups about any limitations, and provide any necessary repairs to keep ships running smoothly.A day on the job could include checking to see that the ship’s engineering equipment is in top shape or carrying out metal work responsibilities, like burning, welding or machining. They’re also trained in emergencies, such as damage control, firefighting and helicopter crash rescue.Marine Technicians have the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge of the following systems:

• Propulsion gas turbine and diesel engines and associated systems, including gearing and shafting

• Generators and power distribution systems, including casualty power

• Hydraulic equipment and systems

• Electronic machinery control systems

• Fitted and portable damage control and firefighting equipment

• Refrigeration, air conditioning and ventilation equipment

• Fuel and other liquid management systems

Work EnvironmentMarine Technicians experience the unique adventures and challenges that come with work at sea, such as working in limited light conditions and small spaces. There may be occasions when they work on open deck surfaces in a variety of weather conditions repairing or maintaining equipment. While at sea, all members of the ship’s company stand watch in shifts. When the ship is docked, Marine Technicians usually work a regular day-shift schedule.EducationThe minimum required education to apply for this position is the completion of the provincial requirements for Grade 10 or Secondaire IV in Quebec, including Gr 10 Academic Math or Math 426 (TS4 or SN4).Basic Military QualificationBasic Military Qualification (BMQ) is the first step in a new CAF member’s career. BMQ training provides basic core skills and common knowledge for all CAF trades. A goal of this course is to ensure that all recruits maintain CAF physical fitness standards; as a result, the training is physically demanding. Naval Reservists’ BMQ is designed to be flexible; the course is conducted in three phases. The first and second phases are conducted part-time with the local unit throughout the year. The third phase is conducted in Valcartier (QC) during the summer for three weeks.Basic Occupational Qualification TrainingMarine Technicians attend Naval Fleet School (Pacific) in Esquimalt, British Columbia. Training includes:

• Basic mechanical, electrical and hull systems theory

• Basic preventive and corrective maintenance for marine systems

• The conduct of propulsion and ancillary rounds

• Equipment flash-up and shut-down procedures

• Basic emergency responses to equipment failures

• Emergency burning and welding equipment and procedures

• Repair of watertight and non-watertight closures

Available Specialty TrainingMarine Technicians may be offered the opportunity to develop specialized skills through formal courses and/or on-the-job training, including:

• Helicopter Crash Rescue Firefighting

• Welding

• Fabrication/Machining

• Diesel Inspection

• Gas Turbine Maintenance

Available Advanced TrainingAs they progress in their career, Marine Technicians who demonstrate the required ability and potential may be offered advanced training. Available courses include:

• Advanced mechanical preventive/corrective maintenance

• Advanced electrical preventive/corrective maintenance

• Plant operation and watch supervision

• Advanced firefighting/damage control

• Refit management

• Equipment lifecycle management

• Maintenance management

Specific Navy TrainingNaval recruits attend the Naval Fleet School in Esquimalt, British Columbia or the Naval Fleet School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Training includes the following topics:

• Naval history and organization

• Shipboard firefighting and damage control

• Shipboard safety and ship’s security

• Watchkeeping duties

• Seamanship
