Job Description

Overview:As the Media & Public Relations Specialist you will be the sole point of contact with the media and responsible for the strategic plan, organization and implementation of activities aimed at building and enhancing a positive public profile for the Corporation while ensuring effective communication with stakeholders, media and the public.You will lead the Corporation’s own journalistic-style newsroom that generates positive earned media, subsequently enhancing public sentiment towards the Corporation by crafting accurate and strong key messages to both owned digital channels and media outlets. As the Corporation’s public voice, you will coach others internally on media while maintaining a good working relationship with the media to provide positive and informed context for all their dealings with the Corporation.Responsibilities:

  • Develop proactive media and public relations plans including strategy, goals and tactics.
  • Conduct situation analysis to identify challenges and opportunities, identify target audiences, develop key corporate messages and manage implementation and evaluation.
  • Speak publicly at media interviews, press conferences and presentations; or prepares corporate representatives for interview. Accurately represent the corporate position and key messages.
  • Develop and deliver outward-facing communications to address moderately complex and often highly sensitive business issues.
  • Manage and maintain media and public relations engagement on specific corporate-owned social media channels including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
  • Assess the effectiveness of media and public relations activities through a variety of measured approaches.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure brand consistency.
  • Provide communication advice to other divisions and senior management.
  • Write and edit communication materials such as corporate news releases, speeches and presentations for senior management, publications and web copy.
Qualifications:
  • Diploma or Degree in communications, journalism, public relations or related discipline.
  • Seven years of experience leading complex journalism, public relations and communication projects.
  • Direct experience as a media reporter is an asset.
  • Ability to manage social media channels appropriate for PR engagement.
  • Background in researching, writing and editing publications.
  • Ability to communicate calmly, persuasively and appropriately during interviews and confrontational situations.
  • In-depth understanding of news media, including journalism principles, news cycles and interview techniques.
  • Ability to travel to media events.
