THE ORGANIZATIONEstablished as a National Charitable organization in 1994, Canada’s National History Society (Canada’s History / CNHS) encourages all Canadians to share their stories and contribute to our collective understanding. We believe that our past is what shapes our future, and it is only by understanding our past that we can really understand who we are and prepare for a better future.The Society oversees the Governor General’s History Awards, annually recognizing the outstanding work of teachers, academics, museums, community groups and popular storytellers. The Society’s work includes Canada’s History magazine (formerly The Beaver), Kayak: Canada’s History Magazine for Kids, CanadasHistory.ca and HistoireCanada.ca. A growing Youth Channel now includes more than a thousand videos created by the next generation of Canadian storytellers.The Society engages more than 2 million readers of all ages using compelling and informative stories, videos and digital content. Our audience reflects the diversity of contemporary Canada. Millennials, represent 38% of the Canada’s History audience while Gen Z accounts for 27% of our readership. Thirty-one percent (31%) of our readers were born outside Canada and 14% speak a language other than English or French at home.Headquartered in Winnipeg with a 17-member professional staff, the Society is governed by a 12-member national, volunteer Board of Directors. It has an annual budget of $3.0 million with revenue derived from publishing, government contributions, and charitable gifts.THE POSITIONBring your passion for Canada to this unique organization dedicated to deepening Canadians’ interest in and understanding of their histories. The President & CEO of Canada’s National History Society will lead the overall vision and strategic direction of the organization. In addition to monitoring key developments and opportunities for growth and stewardship, the role involves setting program goals and priorities, annual budgets, providing hands-on leadership; creating, implementing, and participating in a fundraising plan; identifying potential partners and revenue sources and working with volunteer fundraisers to execute the plan. The President & CEO is the principal spokesperson for the organization and drives its communications, government, and donor relations strategies.This senior management role requires the President & CEO to work as a leader who upholds and promotes organizational values, develops and implements timely strategies and initiatives that are aligned with the overall strategy, and nurtures a positive, collaborative and communications-oriented work environment.RESPONSIBILITIESStrategic Direction & Vision

  • Lead CNHS forward in the development and execution of a new strategic plan with a compelling vision that ensures the long-term financial viability of the organization.
  • Ensure CNHS operates within its mission statement and strategic plan while setting revenue targets, policies, and organizational strategies to meet those goals.
  • Stimulate and promote excellence and innovation in CNHS’ programs and publications.
  • Build and nurture relationships with scholars and educators, members, partners, NGOs, major donors and funders, and other stakeholders.
  • Deliver on CNHS’ commitment to reconciliation and inclusivity in the representation, presentation, and interpretation of Indigenous stories and experiences in its programs and publications.
  • Actively develop and improve the delivery of membership benefits to meet the needs and expectations of members.
  • Promote the commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion within the staff, Board and members, deepening CNHS’ engagement with Indigenous leaders and communities and other under-represented groups.
  • Bring an innovative and fresh approach to connect to the broader communities of Canada with the goal of increasing community engagement through innovative and entrepreneurial ideas and actions.
Fundraising & Revenue Development
  • Secure and steward major sponsors, foundations, and individual donors from the private and government sectors.
  • Identify opportunities for growth and funding to develop other revenue sources.
  • Lead fundraising campaigns. Be active in fundraising activities through external relations initiatives and strategic stakeholder engagements.
Financial Planning & Management
  • Develop an overall financial strategy for the organization in consultation with the Board and Director of Finance & Administration to advance the strategic plan and any longer-term capital projects while ensuring financial sustainability.
  • Assume responsibility of the direct fiscal management of the organization within the approved annual budget, ensuring optimized resource utilization, and maintaining a positive financial position including the management of cash flow and approval of capital expenditures and acquisitions.
  • Working with the Director of Finance & Administration, manage all income and expenditures, implementing suitable financial controls and providing effective monitoring and budget reporting throughout the year.
Marketing, Communications & Government Relations
  • Assure that the organization and its mission, programs and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive way to relevant stakeholders.
  • Represent CNHS with key local, provincial, and national government officials, corporate executives, strategic partners, donors, members, and other relevant sectors as a spokesperson.
  • Provide leadership to Marketing in the development, implementation and analysis of marketing and branding for CNHS.
  • In collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief and Director of Content & Communications, lead the creation of the overall marketing and communications strategy to ensure continued and expanding engagement with members and external communities.
  • Establish and oversee communications protocols internally and externally that both serve the mandate of CNHS as well as work to promote awareness and growth of the organization.
  • Develop and implement strategies to ensure patrons, funders, donors, business/community leaders, elected officials and the public understand CNHS’ role, value, and contributions.
  • Raise the profile of CNHS by developing and implementing strategies to ensure patrons, funders, donors, business/community leaders, elected officials and the public understand CNHS’ role, value, and contributions.
Executive Management
  • Oversee and direct all program and publication activities ensuring effective program development, administration, execution, and evaluation.
  • Ensure an administrative organizational structure is in place that has the capacity to execute the strategic plan while maintaining high engagement Report regularly to the Board of Directors on progress in implementing CNHS’ plans and achievement of goals and objectives. Acts as the prime representative to the Development Committee and management representative to all Board Committees.
  • Develop and foster a workplace culture that maintains the highest standards of excellence, equality, creativity, collaboration, inclusiveness, and fiscal, operational, and organizational integrity.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Progressive leadership experience in the Not-For-Profit or other relevant sector(s).
  • A strategic thinker and visionary with the ability to facilitate, mentor and deliver results.
  • Strong business acumen and financial management skills with experience in developing and managing budgets and meeting financial goals and targets.
  • Fundraising experience – ability to raise private and public funds while creating a culture of philanthropy within the organization.
  • Experience building and effectively managing government relationships.
  • Curiosity and passion for Canada and its histories.
  • Knowledge and awareness of marketing, branding, and public relations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of digital media.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent relationship and team builder.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and proven commitment to the values of equity, inclusion, and diversity in every facet of CNHS’ operations.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present effectively to stakeholders and communities.
  • Strong management experience with the ability to effectively lead professional staff across multiple locations.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with experience reporting to a Board of Directors.
  • Willingness and ability to travel across Canada.
  • Relevant undergraduate degree or experiential equivalent.
  • Functional proficiency in both official languages is desirable.
