Job Description

Job DescriptionThe Just a Warm Sleep Program lead serves as the leader of the Just a Warm Sleep Team, which provides short- and long-term support to community members in finding housing and preventing evictions. The Just a Warm Sleep Program Lead also oversees and operates the Emergency Warming Shelter during the winter months.Reports to: Executive Director of 1JustCitySupervises: Housing Support Staff and Volunteer Housing Mentors at the Oak Table, West End, and West Broadway sites.Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain relationships with participants who attend 1JustCity sites.
  • Support participants in obtaining and transitioning into housing, and maintaining their housing through systems navigation, supportive counselling, education, and advocacy.
  • Managing a caseload of individuals who require ongoing support in obtaining housing or keeping the housing they have by eviction prevention.
  • Conduct home visits to participants living in the community.
  • Liaise with landlords, caseworkers and other individuals to advocate on behalf of participants.
  • Have knowledge of and ability to navigate community resources and government systems.
  • Attend sector working group meetings on behalf of 1JustCity.
  • Create and facilitate information sessions to support eviction prevention.
  • Coordinate speakers and facilitate information sessions on community resources, tenancy rights and responsibilities, etc.
  • Manage a team of support staff and volunteers, including onboarding and training of new staff and volunteers, and volunteer recruitment.
  • Provide consultation and supervision to support staff and volunteers. Provide performance feedback to staff and develop goals with each staff member.
  • Provide staffing information to the Financial Coordinator for payroll and benefits.
  • Review relevant policies with staff and ensure policies are followed
  • Compile documentation and statistics for reporting and tracking work completed with guests.
  • Provide statistics required by grantors and complete reports required by the deadline provided.
  • Draft procedures for Executive Director approval for the Just a Warm Sleep program.
  • Coordinate the operation of the Emergency Warming Shelter from December - March including organizing food delivery and security, recruiting and training volunteers and working with security and other shelters and outreach teams to ensure guests are receiving the support they require in finding a place to sleep each night, facilitating weekly staff meetings, submitting incident reports, being on-call, and coordinating donations and services with Oak Table site lead.
  • Participate in leadership meetings. Provide regular updates on the program to 1JustCity Site Leads and a written report to the Executive Director on a monthly basis.
  • Coordinate with 1JustCity Site Leads for guest services when needed.
  • Build relationships with social service providers to support guests in navigating government systems and social services to meet their needs (ex. Spence Neighbourhood Association).
Qualifications & Abilities:
  • A University or College degree in a Human Services field.
  • 2-3 years of experience working in the social services field providing direct support to participants through systems navigation, supportive counselling, education, and advocacy.
  • Experience providing support to participants who have or are experiencing problematic substance use, mental health challenges, trauma, homelessness, or poverty.
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate presentations to community members.
  • Knowledge of Winnipeg resources for individuals experiencing poverty, homelessness, mental health challenges, problematic substance use, and gender-based violence are considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the impacts of colonization, residential schools, the 60’s scoop, child welfare system, and the genocide of Indigenous peoples.
  • Knowledge of and willingness to learn of anti-oppressive, cultural humility, pro-choice, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction principles.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills with the ability to manage workload, meet deadlines, and document work with participants.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to work in a high stress environment, and adapt to the needs of the participant.
  • Ability to work from a non-judgemental and accepting attitude, and seeks to understand guest’s feelings, needs, values, and opinions.
  • Ability to practice personal professional boundaries.
  • Ability to be on-call.
  • Possess computer skills including a proficiency with MS Word & Excel, Google Suite, and ability to learn new programs required to collect data according to funder requirements. including the Homeless Individuals and Families Information System.
  • Demonstrates analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of, or experience working in the not-for-profit subsidized housing sector is an asset.
About 1JustCity1JustCity operates drop-in sites in three vulnerable Winnipeg neighbourhoods: the West End, West Broadway, and Osborne Village. In the winter months, we also operate an Emergency Overnight Warming Shelter called Just a Warm Sleep. We provide services to over 1200 unique individuals weekly, and support nearly 7000 people in total. We work with people living in poverty; experiencing homelessness or precarious housing, mental health issues and/or drug/alcohol dependency, social isolation, oppression due to race or gender identity, and more.Our primary programs are daily drop-ins, where guests are welcome for meals, a cup of coffee, and social interaction. We also provide an Indigenous Cultural Program which gives accessible opportunities for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people alike to experience Indigenous culture and engage in concrete reconciliation action. We provide programs for guests to enhance their lives and resources to assist them in accessing the services they need.Our work is grounded in relationships, and our drop-ins are places where people are known by name and are loved. While we provide for basic needs, we also strive to offer programs that are transformational and change lives for the better.Job Type: Full-timeSalary: From $20.00 per hourBenefits:
