Job Description

POSITION AVAILABLE Title of Position Program AssistantTerm Part-time, 15 hours per weekLocation: Various partner locations in WinnipegStart date: Sept. 19, 2022- June 24, 2023Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization that was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults, and families who need help to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of partner organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada. Frontier College is accredited under the Imagine Canada Standards program.We are seeking a mature, responsible, committed, and self-motivated individual who identify as part of the Indigenous community to fill the Program Assistant position in our Truth and Reconciliation program being offered in collaboration with CEDA, and Marymound Pathways in Winnipeg, MB. Preference given to individuals in Indigenous Studies, Education, Social Services, or related field/discipline.The Program Assistant will be expected to work independently under the supervision of the Community Coordinator to deliver a diverse array of Indigenous curriculum with investigation and learning around Residential Schools in a safe, caring environment. The Program Assistant must be prepared to demonstrate initiative and creativity to engage the youth in the Truth and Reconciliation curriculum. This program will allow the youth, aged 13-21, to learn about reconciliation and the Residential School experience. With extra support needed for the youth to investigate the Residential Schools, the Program Assistant will need to be supportive of the emotional needs of all involved.Overall Accountability Frontier College Program Assistants work very closely as a team with our partners, and Frontier College volunteers. All Frontier College positions work under the remote mentoring/supervision and report directly to the Community Coordinator and/or Regional Manager.Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Day to day planning & facilitating of literacy embedded activities with the introduction of Indigenous Culture, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report and the Calls to Action.
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with different stakeholders.
  • Recruit and schedule community members, Elders, parents, and caregivers to be guests at programming.
  • Maintain accurate records on a daily and weekly basis and submit to the Community Coordinator.
  • Gathering feedback from caregivers/parents, community members, & participants via the surveys/testimonials
  • Effective communication skills both verbally and written.
  • Ensuring all program directives and procedures are followed correctly and accurately
  • Other duties as assigned by Frontier College
Skills, Attributes and Requirements
  • Valid proof of COVID -19 vaccination or proof of medical exemption required for all in-person work
  • Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit)
  • An understanding of and sensitivity to the experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis (FNIM) peoples, and the impact of the legacy of Residential Schools and colonization upon them is essential.
  • Respect for, sensitivity towards as well as knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, traditions, and teachings.
  • Inclusive in supporting participants from Indigenous and Non-Indigenous backgrounds.
  • Minimum 18 years old.
  • A positive, friendly, and approachable disposition.
  • Adaptable, self-motivated, responsible, and enthusiastic individual
  • Superior planning, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Able to work within a team environment and with different personalities/working styles, even in challenging situations
  • Ability to work independently at times

  • Ability to manage challenging behaviors within a large group setting
  • Demonstrated experience working with groups of children and/or youth

  • Experienced with facilitating circles and group teachings.
Screening & Selection: Candidates will be screened through:- Interview- Reference Checks (names & phone numbers of 3 references will be required)- Criminal Record Check (CRC) with a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) will be required*Successful candidates are required to provide a current CRC (new or not older than 6 months from the term start date) with vulnerable sector search. Frontier College will cover the cost of the CRC and VSC (a receipt must be provided) *Compensation: $18.00 per hour, 15 hours per week.
