Job Description

Location: East Region (Conklin to Wainwright), AlbertaEmployment Type: Full Time – PermanentInspector, Field Operations, EastThe OpportunityThe AER ensures the safe, efficient, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of oil, natural gas, and coal resources over their entire life cycle.As an Inspector, you are the eyes and ears of the organization in the field. Working within the Compliance & Liability Management (CLM) branch, the AER is currently recruiting for an Inspector for the Field Operations East (FOE) region.We conduct proactive inspections in a multitude of disciplines and are responsible for independently assessing and responding to incidents and complaints from stakeholders, conducting compliance assurance activities, provide industry education in the field, and support other functions of the branch and the enterprise with field-level intelligence. This role participates in the 24 hour on-call rotation and may represent the AER in industry forums, hearings, and alternative dispute resolutions.Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and independently conduct complex inspections on operations/activities within the AER’s jurisdiction. Prepare inspection plans and sampling equipment (if necessary). Collect and analyze information from varied and numerous sources to determine compliance, resolve problems and make recommendations to improve environmental practices. Prepare letters and inspection reports. Perform follow up action as required.
  • Support the team in other planning and reporting activities in alignment with AER policies, procedures, the Compliance Assurance Program, and Branch Operational Plan.
  • Respond to and support others in handling incidents and stakeholder complaints.
  • Respond to calls on the 24-hour emergency response/complaint line as part of a rotating on-call schedule.
  • Communicate and consult with industry regarding areas of concern. Lead meetings and deliver technical presentations to industry and government agencies. Participate in synergy groups and at open houses as necessary.
  • Support provincial teams and assist when needed to develop proactive inspection programs. Share the information between provincial teams and field centre teams. Assist and/or train and mentor other staff as needed.
  • Contribute to provincial initiatives or assignments related to operational needs, regulatory, and technical issues as appropriate. Participate in technical teams to develop and implement policies and procedures. Act as a subject matter expert, providing support to hearings or ADR sessions as required.
  • Contribute towards creating and maintaining a positive and collaborative working environment.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures and policies.
Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary training in engineering, environmental sciences or other related fields is preferred.
  • 6+ years working experience in regulatory and/or field operations. Preference will be given to those experienced with:
  • Thermal recovery production operations.
  • Waste management operations
  • Incident and complaint response.
  • Ability to lead independently and conduct complex inspections within subject area.
  • Ability to lead meetings and deliver technical presentations to industry and government agencies.
  • Ability to assist and/or train and mentor other staff as needed.
  • Ability to act as a subject matter expert, providing support to CLM Provincial Teams to interpret regulation, and develop and implement policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Ability to prioritize work based on risk and value.
  • Strong communication skills; written and verbal interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgement.
Additional Requirements/Information:
  • This is a permanent position located in Field Operations East region. The regional office is located in Bonnyville, Alberta, however the location of the successful candidate is flexible and telecommuting arrangements will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • Pre-placement Medical and Driver’s Abstract required.
  • Applicants must possess a fully valid driver’s license along with a positive driving record. The word fully describes the criteria for a class 5 as opposed to a graduated license, and positive driving record as defined in the AER driving policy.
  • Must have physical ability to conduct typical Oil & Gas field work, including driving prolonged distances, climbing stairs, ladders, etc., walking around industrial sites in all conditions, walking into remote locations, and ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Standard First Aid, H2S Alive, ICS 200 certifications are required for this position. These trainings and certifications can be provided.
  • Some overnight travel may be required on occasion (several times/year).
  • Approximately 50% field work and 50% office work.

  • Have a high-speed internet connection with a minimum of 50 Mbps for downloads and 30 Mbps for uploads when working remotely.
