The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III.Position OverviewThe Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Research Specialist for approximately 2 years.As a Research Specialist for the Schulich School of Engineering (SSE), you will play a vital role in facilitating the research process at SSE, supporting researchers in securing funding for their projects, and promoting the growth and development of SSE #39;s research program. This position works closely with academic staff, Associate Dean Research and senior managers, as well as liaise with the UofC Research Services. This role will report to the Manager of Community and Social Impact.The primary purpose of the Research Specialist position is to provide comprehensive research facilitation in the SSE. This includes reviewing grant applications, administering research agreements and funding applications, coordinating with faculty members and funding agencies, analyzing research statistics, liasing with the university Research Services and providing support to the Associate Dean Research.In this role, you will provide advice, education, assistance, and information to SSE faculty members to support the research process. Additionally, you will collaborate with other university units such as the VPR Office, Research Services, International Office, other faculties, and Innovate Calgary to proactively identify and capitalize on funding opportunities for SSE researchers. This role will work in conjunction with the Research Coordinator, the Grant Writers and the Event and Admin Coordinators.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develops expert knowledge on funding requirements for funding programs that fall within their portfolio and provides advising in the development of grant proposals for faculty.
  • Provide editorial and criteria review to ensure research is communicated effectively in line with University and funding agency policy/guidelines
  • Educates researchers about policies, timelines and procedures related to the grant submission process for a wide array of funding agencies.
  • Work in concert with the Research Services Office to coordinate research grant submissions in line with the University of Calgary policies and procedures (i.e. internal approvals)
  • Keeps up to date on funding opportunities in what is a complex and rapidly changing environment
  • Analyze data from diverse sources, and review records of research funding statistics, research performance measures, grant applications, publications, citations, and other relevant information.
  • Manage time efficiently to meet concurrent deadlines and handle tasks within a high workload and constantly changing environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both writtenamp; oral to enable concise correspondence, and respond to enquiries with confidentiality and discretion; to disseminate information is required.
  • Liaise with Research Services, Legal Services, external agencies and partner universities during the grant development and submission process as necessary.
  • Ensure the research community is appropriately informed, in a timely manner of emerging opportunities, program changes and requirements
  • Respond to industry inquiries for equipment or possible research collaborations and meet with industry and faculty as required.
  • Recognize and protect sensitive information contained in grant proposals, including confidential research plans, intellectual property, and faculty, staff and trainee salary details.
  • Provide strategic support for events, committees and meetings related to research funding. This includes facilitation.
  • Oversee the Undergraduate Student Summer Research Program
  • Ability for occasional travel within Canada to attend research facilitation events, training, and site-visits
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Masters degree in Engineering or Science is required. PhD and/or post-doctoral experience is an asset.
  • Professional experience of 2-5 years with research or project administrationamp; coordination is required.
  • Strong knowledge of the academic research funding landscape is essential.
  • Skilled at data extraction and compilation, and ability to solve problems related to data management is required.
  • Professional judgement and strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills are required.
  • Attention to detail, ability to prioritize tasks logically is a required skill demonstrated by experience.
  • Experience with financial and budget administration, is an asset.
  • Ability to learn new computer programs, expert level Microsoft Excel and Teams; PeopleSoft; Research Management System are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and adapt to multiple competing priorities.
