Job Description

The Chemical Process Research Scientist will report to the Manager within the Hydrogen Technologies Branch. The Branch consists of the following general areas/activities:Hydrogen production, storage, applications and safety:

  • Thermochemical hydrogen production using nuclear or renewable energy sources.
  • Low and high temperature electrolysers for hydrogen production.
  • Electrochemical characterization of processes.
  • Hydrogen and other energy storage methods, distribution and network optimization.
  • Applications of hydrogen in fuel cells, transportation etc.
  • Hydrogen safety in nuclear and non-nuclear applications.
Catalyst technologies:
  • Deployment of CNL #39;s catalyst technologies for nuclear and non-nuclear applications
The incumbent will be part of a well-established team of professionals and technologists specializing in the above fields. The team #39;s objective is to increase CNL #39;s Value Proposition through delivery on exciting science and technology (S amp;T) projects. The team is actively involved in developing, assessing and facilitating commercialization of innovative leading edge technologies through Business Development at CNL.The Chemical Process Research Scientist will work specifically in the area of hydrogen and clean fuel production. They will also be involved in the application of technologies and products in this area. This would involve leading projects on experimental evaluations, process development and optimization, conceptual designs and process designs. The incumbent will apply engineering expertise to a range of experimental work in lab to pilot scale systems. The incumbent will help with existing and new collaborations and direct commercial activities. They will be expected to develop and maintain core competencies for emerging opportunities in this area.DUTIES
  • Accountable for the safe operation of all activities under their responsibility.
  • Responsible for aligning project priorities with those of the Directorate and the Science and Technology value proposition.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers and technologists to achieve goals of their projects.
  • Accountable to the progress of the project in terms of technical achievements and project delivery.
  • Accountable for supervision of staff involved in the projects that the incumbent is responsible for.
  • Prepare proposals to secure funding for research programs at CNL or other commercial opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master #39;s Degree in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing.
  • Preferably a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Chemistry or Physics.
  • Minimum 3 years #39; experience in applied research in an industrial or institutional setting is preferred.
  • Postdoctoral or work experience in related field(s) is an asset.
  • Proficiency in fundamentals of scienceamp; engineering - chemical thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and mass/heat transfer.
  • Experience with operation of large scale or laboratory-scale chemistry/chemical engineering test loops would be an asset.
  • Chemical process engineering experience will be a definite asset.
  • Experience in process simulation using commercial software will be an asset.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures in laboratory operations is essential.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite.
  • Experience with proposal preparation, budgeting, project planning is desired.
  • Knowledge of QA, licence and design code requirements for projects
  • An excellent written and oral command of the English language is required for this position.
  • The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic self-starter who enjoys working with a team of scientists and technologists.
