Job Description

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is a world leader in developing peaceful and innovative applications of nuclear technology through its expertise in physics, metallurgy, chemistry, biology, and engineering. CNL is Canada #39;s leading nuclear science and technology organization, with established and diverse nuclear-driven research and capabilities that have been developed over more than 70 years, including expertise and technical excellence in the field of medical isotope production.The purpose of the position is to lead R amp;D projects and initiatives in the areas of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals for nuclear medicine and health applications. The Radioisotopesamp; Medical Applications section of the Radiobiologyamp; Health Branch is seeking a Senior Radiochemist in the research areas of isotope production and the application of targeted radionuclide therapeutics. This position aligns with a scientific team working to drive and implement the Isotopes, Radiobiologyamp; Environment Directorate (IRED) strategy that will ensure CNL #39;s position as a leading organization in the production and use of radioisotopes for therapeutic applications, including Actinium-225 for Targeted Alpha Therapy (TAT).The position will undertake the duties of Research Scientist-Radiochemist as part of the Radiobiology and Health Branch, delivering on work and initiatives within CNL #39;s S amp;T Program. The position is critical to the success of CNL #39;s mission towards pioneering new alpha therapeutics for cancer treatment and advancing CNL S amp;T #39;s Alpha Research Strategic Initiatives, funded by AECL #39;s Federal Nuclear Scienceamp; Technology (FNST) and Lab-Directed Scienceamp; Technology (LDST) programs; and is closely connected to CNL #39;s Isotopes Production Business. Further, this position directly supports the radiochemistry R amp;D needs for CNL #39;s mission to advance Actinium-225 scale-up production activities, and is required to increase CNL #39;s reputation as a leader in medical isotopes and radiopharmaceutical R amp;D and as a trusted supplier of pre-clinical R amp;D services for industry.The position holder will propose, lead and conduct R amp;D projects in areas related to radioisotope production, radiopharmaceutical development and applications, and will have a strong commitment to lead commercial projects within these areas, and increase commercial R amp;D services within the Health Portfolio. As such, he/she will conduct research activities with other scientists and technologists, to implement and execute the strategy and provide R amp;D services to internal and external customers. The position holder will also support external engagements that aims at increasing the impact of our research through collaborations, partnerships and expanding the range of our customers to grow our revenue stream. The successful candidate will report to the Branch Manager.DUTIESTypical Duties Can Include:

  • Actively participating in short and long term planning of the branch and the health program, influencing the Directorate strategic plans in the field of radioisotopes and medical applications. -Manage research projects within the FNST, LDST, and commercial portfolios, scheduling and coordinating research activities, and interacting with staff and management.
  • Leading and supervising project teams/technologists to implement the strategy, execute work plan(s), while providing technical and scientific expertise in support of CNL business development.
  • Pro-actively working with CNL #39;s business development to identify opportunities and lead R amp;D activities for commercial contracts, in the areas of radiochemistry, formulation optimization and testing, and pre-clinical evaluation of new radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Provide technical and scientific expertise in support of CNL business development and other business areas.
  • Attending and delivering oral presentations at technical meetings, workshops, conferences and business intake meetings representing the company on scientific and technological issues nationally and internationally.
  • Leading initiatives and generating new research project proposals with appropriate resourcing and budgeting, and ensuring the research scope is accomplished within these confines.
  • Providing scientific advice within the company and to external clients.
  • Seeking and establishing collaborative research opportunities.
  • Generating results and publications in peer reviewed scientific literature.
  • Contributing to the results of the team #39;s scientific research, and preparing research reports for publication in peer reviewed scientific literature, as well as research reports for internal and external customers.
  • Authoring and reviewing administrative, progress, scientific, and technical reports, including high quality reports for customers, as well as journal and project publications, to inform and support the federal priorities.

  • Quality Assurance/Quality -Control requirements, applicable environmental and safety regulations and requirements (industrial and radiological), and company policies and procedures (including relevant labour contracts).
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A PhD degree in Chemistry or related, from a university of recognized standing is required.
  • A minimum of 12-15 years of relevant working experience in the areas of Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, or Biochemistry is required.
  • Strong theoretical knowledge and practical skills/experience in radioisotope production, targetry chemistry, separation chemistry, characterization and synthesis for radiolabelled compounds/ radiopharmaceuticals, is required.
  • Experience in shielded facilities/hot cells and automation of processes is essential.
  • Demonstrated R amp;D experience with academic collaborators and with customers in delivering services for industry.
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of supervisory experience in a research environment is required
  • Demonstrated ability to publish the results of their scientific research as a lead author in peer reviewed scientific literature is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate within multidisciplinary environments and audiences, including shareholders (non-expert), industry partners, and collaborators, is required.
  • A demonstrated commitment to laboratory safety including a good working knowledge of the hazards associated with radioactive materials, chemicals and biological materials.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills are essential to the performance of the duties of the post. The incumbent must be able to effectively interact with staff at various levels (technical, management and customer) to meet operational objectives.
