Find out for yourself as we are currently looking for an Environmental, Health and Safety Manager for our Maibec CanExel siding plant in East River, Nova Scotia which is conveniently located between the beautiful communities of Hubbards and Chester.Reporting to the Maibec CanExel Plant Manager, the EHS Manager is responsible for implementing, supporting and monitoring business EHS programs, to act as an advocate for EHS compliance programs, to customize programs to the specific operations of the plant, and promote and ensure implementation of the plant level EHS systems.Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for the plant in all EHS matters
  • Oversee performance in EHS core values for operations on the site
  • Manage, oversee and promote the site EHS systems and lead continuous improvement in EHS
  • Manage and lead EHS Department
  • Manage Waste Water Treatment processes and ensure compliance
  • Review and analyze the effectiveness of current programs; recommend improvements to policies and procedures and research and develop new EHS programs
  • Advise Plant Manager on compliance issues
  • Report regulatory issues, including spills, releases and emergencies, as required by law
  • Develop and write sampling and testing procedures
  • Monitor the record keeping and reporting of various Safety and Environmental measures
  • Coordinate and manage activities of the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee
  • Manage Fire Prevention Plans and Contractor Safety process
  • Negotiate permit terms and influence rule making
  • Coordinate, respond to and perform EHS assessments
  • Participate in corporate and external audits, coordinate audits of and follow-up on items needing attention
  • Independently interact with EHS regulators; accompany government inspectors on agency inspections
  • Schedule and participate in monitoring, sampling, and testing of permitted process and pollution control equipment for compliance
  • Lead the investigation of site EHS incidents, identifying root causes of incidents to determine and initiate corrective actions in conjunction with the management team and the JOHSC.
  • Provide input to Facility Management regarding pollution control equipment operation and maintenance programs as related to permit requirements
  • Coordinate and manage activities of plant EMS team
Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety and Health, Environmental, Science, Engineering or related field.
  • Certificates or licenses in specialized EHS areas helpful.
  • 5 plus years of experience in the EHS field.
  • Experience managing waste water treatment processes and ensuring compliance is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate individuals and teams to achieve program and project outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience working in an industrial setting
  • Ability to communicate in French is considered an asset;
  • Have an advanced skill level in Microsoft Office programs;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Federal, Provincial and local environmental, industrial health, safety, and fire prevention rules, regulations, and related strategies.
  • Working knowledge of safety policies & procedures and fire prevention programs.
  • Effective leadership, interpersonal, organizational, and management skills, preferably in an industrial and unionized setting
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong ethics and professionalism
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and analyze basic data, develop metrics, and perform cost benefit analysis.
Work Environment:
  • Ability to wear a respirator.
  • Ability to climb ladders up to heights of 60 feet or greater
  • Ability to work on roofs.
  • Ability to work for short periods in physically stressful situations required
  • Some infrequent travel may be required
