District of Fort St. JamesPublic Works LabourerThe District of Fort St. James is a Historic and Resourceful community of approximately 1400, serving a local area of approximately 4500 people. Please check us out at www.fortstjames.ca.The District is seeking applications for the position of Public Works LaborerPublic Works LaborerThe Public Works Laborer will perform duties to ensure efficient operation and maintenance of municipal infrastructure. The position will require the individual to perform various tasks related to the public works department. The position may require intermittent duties related with Arena Operation if required. This Position is supervised by the Public Works Superintendent with direction from the PW Foreman and/or designated lead hand. The position is a physically strenuous and demanding position. Lifting, pulling, and managing heavy equipment and objects will be required from the individual, while ensuring that all activities are completed in a safe and efficient way. The individual may at times be exposed to dangerous and/or toxic substances, outside weather elements winter and summer, and must take necessary precautions to protect themselves with proper PPE. The candidate for this position will be able work independently while maintaining a schedule of work and the ability to prioritize tasks. This position is a unionized position.Position Description:This classification is semi-skilled manual labour within a Public Works environment under the supervision of the Public Works Foreman or assigned supervisor. The candidate may be required to assist with Arena duties as required if necessary.Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Public Works Laborer will report to the Public Works Superintendent or the Public Works Foreman or his delegated supervisor for the performance of the following duties:

  • Public Works related duties
  • Maintaining grounds, parks, roads and other District Infrastructure as required
  • Responsible for operation of various equipment and vehicles as necessary for duties
  • Perform custodial duties, general maintenance and repair tasks and miscellaneous building maintenance as required
  • Ability to fill in with Arena duties if assigned
  • When required, operate and maintain equipment for the purpose of various public works responsibilities including sewer, water, roads, snow clearing, airport maintenance, construction, or any other related and assigned responsibility including but not limited to:
    • Garbage Truck
    • Dump Truck/Plow
    • Tool Cat
  • Perform job duties in a safe and efficient manner according to all relevant policies and legislation.
  • Perform safety checks on all District equipment before operation and regularly according to policy.
  • Set up and take down facilities and public areas for special events, scheduled programs, and user groups.
  • Assemble and remove various attachments used in the performance of various functions as required.
  • Perform installations, operation, repair, and replacement of municipal works and infrastructure.
  • Deal with residents and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Participate in training courses as required to ensure competency and compliance to District Operation.
The successful candidate must;
  • Have graduated High school.
  • Possess a class 5 BC driver’s license with air brake endorsements.
  • Currently hold occupational first aid (Level 1) training.
  • Have previous working knowledge of building maintenance, building cleaning and general knowledge of the building trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
  • Possess the ability to operate and maintain a variety of tools and equipment.Have the ability to work safely and effectively without direct supervision while adhering to work procedures and safety regulations.
  • Be able to handle conflict and workplace related issues effectively while enforcing facility policies.
  • Hold surveyors certificate of have substantial knowledge of road layout, ditching and grade requirements.
  • Have training in or knowledge of environmental impacts or environmental studies
  • Possess tickets or have training or knowledge of water distribution, and sanitary sewer collection and treatment
  • Possess tickets in BC ground disturbance or confined space or the ability to obtain
The normal shift for this position is Monday to Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm but it may be required to work shift work, or evenings, weekends, and holidays. Wages will be subject to the District’s collective agreement with CUPE 4951. Base rates for a Public Works Laborer/Arena Attendant position begin at $33.85 per hour.Interested internal employees are invited to apply within 5 working days of this posting and will be considered first.
