Job Description

Closing Date: August 1, 2022Reporting to the Manager, Closure and Biodiversity Strategy, and working with a Teck Legacy project controls and contracts team, the Lead, Reclamation and Closure participates in and coordinates all aspects of studies, site field activities and projects related to reclamation and closure at a selection of Teck Legacy Properties (closed mines) in Canada. This includes health and safety, contract management, management of consultants, oversight of field personnel and contractors, schedule, scope control, budget and cost control, and quality control/assurance.Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules, regulations and procedures
  • Be an advocate for and promote an inclusive, respectful and equitable work environment
  • Manage the planning and execution of environmental, geotechnical and/or reclamation research and site characterization programs, including scoping, schedule, tracking risks and opportunities, cost and resourcing requirements, and site/field communications
  • Support the Manager, Closure and Biodiversity Strategy to facilitate a strategic review of all Legacy Properties to develop prioritized short-term and longer-term workplans designed to achieve the goals of minimizing liability and maximizing community support
  • Support the Manager, Closure and Biodiversity Strategy to implement a process to review site characterization programs, identify gaps to address with additional research, develop tools to support evaluation of closure scenarios intended to address identified risks and long-term liabilities, and allow the above noted prioritization of Legacy Property sites for closure planning and execution
  • Stay current with closure and reclamation emerging technologies and best practice through literature review, conference attendance and peer engagement
  • Identify areas for innovation, through research and development, to ensure continuous improvement of Teck’s closure planning and execution, reclamation research, and biodiversity strategies in alignment with leading practices within Teck and industry-wide, and support that work as required
  • Support the preparation and submission of annual mine reclamation reports, responses to reclamation inspections, and other permit reports, including presentation of technical information to a variety of audiences (internal/external, technical/nontechnical) for a number of sites, to regulators and COI
  • Participate in the preparation, evaluation, recommendation and award of contracts, including preparation of scopes of work, requests for proposals, schedules, cost estimates and qualified bidder lists
  • Support and develop, in collaboration with technical leads, the review of project feasibility, scopes, design criteria, studies, and constructability
  • Provide contractor management and oversight of external consultant and contractor teams
  • Lead and coordinate contractor resources and ensure permits, contractor inductions and safe work plans are in place before work commences
  • Lead all aspects of field programs to ensure safe work practices and work performed meets specified requirements, including documenting observations and deficiencies and ensuring appropriate action is taken
  • Ensure management of contracts and change control processes are carried in accordance with Teck procedures
  • Prepare and maintain project documentation, including owner’s schedules, project charters, organization charts, project reports and project readiness assessments
  • Ensure project files are managed and stored in accordance with document control procedures, files are archived accordingly, and the project is closed out
  • Complete lessons learned sessions at end of projects
Qualifications:
  • Engineering or Science degree in Environmental, Mining, Geotechnical, Civil, or other related field
  • Minimum 10 years demonstrated ability in project management in a water management, mining, infrastructure, geotechnical, environmental, or mechanical engineering field
  • Professional accreditation, such as RPF, PBio, PAg, or registered, or eligible for registration, as a P.Eng or PGeo with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia, would be an asset
  • PMP designation is an asset
  • Experience with environmental legislation, industry standards and permitting processes in Canada
  • Working understanding of the effects of mining on the environment and practical knowledge of mitigation process and environmental management best practices
  • Knowledge of current best practice in mine reclamation and closure practices is an asset
  • Experience with workshop facilitation and engagement with indigenous communities is an asset
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite®; SharePoint is an asset
  • Proven ability to work effectively independently and in a team-based environment
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and strong multi-tasking and organizational skills
  • Strong communications and technical writing skills
