Job Description

Mission for this Position:About UsAt Baffinland, we work and live beyond the Arctic Circle, mining iron ore at our Mary River Property, located in the Qikiqtani Region of Nunavut on Baffin Island; one of the world’s most captivating and seldom seen destinations. We are looking for people ready to share, build, and grow with our company.Reporting to the Human Resources and Labour Relations Manager or designate, the HR Advisor, Disability Management will work in a collaborative manner to lead the development, implementation and training for Baffinland’s Leaves Management Program and provides consultative and leadership support to employees, supervisors, HR/LR professionals and departments managers. The incumbent will monitor and evaluate program effectiveness which includes – reporting, developing and implementing modified work offers, return to work plans, overall leaves and attendance management, etcMain Accountabilities:

  • Communicate with employees, management, union representatives, WSCC and STD/LTD representatives to lead and manage the return to work process in compliance with applicable legislation, Baffinland policy and procedures and the Partnership Agreement.
  • Provide consultative and leadership support to a variety of internal and external stakeholders on disability, leaves and attendance management.
  • Partner with HR/LR Advisors, supervisors, superintendents and managers to ensure consistent application of the overall strategy and adherence to all Baffinland polices and procedures
  • Ensuring information is properly tracked and managed by completing and processing applicable forms and update Baffinland systems
  • Compiling and analyzing information to prepare reports for use by management
  • Act as an internal expert and advisor on Disability, Absenteeism and Attendance Management
  • Participate with or lead Continuous Improvement Projects for HR
  • Monitor and/or investigate to ensure Baffinland has received satisfactory proof of injury / illness for all medical absences and workplace accidents/incidents and when applicable, initiate and submit appropriate documentation for the claim process.
  • Provide advice to management on all injury related incident investigations
  • Develop physical demands analysis (PDA) for all positions; analyze PDA information in conjunction with the employee’s restrictions to identify appropriate modifications required.
  • Utilize a collaborative approach to manage and address barriers impacting the return to work, and develop and modify individual return to work plans in a timely and supportive manner.
  • Act as the initial and ongoing point of contact for internal and external business partners for the duration of the claim.
  • Maintain working knowledge of policies, regulations, legislation and procedures to ensure all claims for occupational and non-occupational illness and injury are processed and managed in an efficient and effective manner. Act as liaison with representatives from WSCC, Group Benefit Plan adjudicators and case managers. relating to Workers Compensation, Group Benefits and RTW.
  • Develop and implement a strategy and process that focuses on employee ability and facilitates an effective/efficient return to work program.
  • Act as a coach, trainer and mentor
  • Successfully leads & implements change while continuing to establish successful partnerships with diverse employees, clients and other stakeholders
  • Highly focused and results-oriented in deadline-driven operations; able to recommend and establish priorities and resolve issues impacting efficient case management and the successful return to work process
  • Coordinate/facilitate independent medical evaluations when appropriate.
  • Maintain consistent uniform records for all claims.
  • Maintain statistical data and provide reports and information to management.
  • Ensure confidentiality of employee claims records; including relevant health information related to the claim.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned by supervisor.
Main Qualifications:
  • College Diploma / Bachelors Degree in Human Resources, Disability Case Management or related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience working in HR/LR or Safety with a primary focus on disability/case management
  • MS PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and data base reporting experience required
  • SAP experience preferred
  • Knowledge with WSCC connect and reporting systems and processesAbility to work a FIFO
  • Willingness to learn and apply the knowledge above and beyond
  • Prior disability management or related experience
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have a strong sense of ownership and has a proven track record for developing solid working relationships with all stakeholders
  • Required to have a strong sense of urgency and effectively work within tight time constraints
  • Must be a multi-tasker, self-starter and highly organized
