Job Description

Mission for this Position:About UsAt Baffinland, we work and live beyond the Arctic Circle, mining iron ore at our Mary River Property, located in the Qikiqtani Region of Nunavut on Baffin Island; one of the world’s most captivating and seldom seen destinations. We are looking for people ready to share, build, and grow with our company.Reporting to the Technical Services Superintendent and under the guidance of the Senior Geologist, the product quality geologist ensures all geological services are provided in a timely fashion and that the Quality Management System is adhered to.Main Accountabilities:

  • Ensuring work procedures are followed and safety standards are adhered to (risk assessment, incident reporting & investigating, policy & procedures review, MOC, etc.).
  • Routinely monitor results and trends in physical and chemical performance across the value chain.
  • Identify trends of non-conformance in product quality and implement corrective actions in a timely manner.
  • Interpret metallurgical, chemical and physical data for use in short and long term mine planning
  • Improve predictability of product quality from mine planning to shipping
  • Provide training and mentorship to personnel involved in the product quality chain.
  • Provide geological information (ore blocks, lithological contacts, structural features, etc.) as required to the technical services team.
  • Conduct QAQC and enforce compliance to Quality Management System.
  • Ensure effective grade control in the mine; optimum ore recovery with minimal dilution by directing and monitoring of ore and rock according to the mining plan and cut-off grades.
  • Develop and monitor compliance to shiploading dig plans.
  • Ensure statutory compliance to TML and issue relevant certificate to all vessels during shiploading season.
Main Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree in Geology or Metallurgy required
  • 3-5 years experience working as a metallurgist or production geologist at an open pit mine
  • 5-7 years of general geology or product quality experience
  • P. Geo in Nunavut (or ability to register)
  • Knowledge of CAD software and geology software package required
