About usTata Steel Minerals Canada Limited (TSMC) with its headquarters at 1000 Sherbrooke W., Suite 1120, Montreal (Quebec), operates iron ore mines in the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec. TSMC is a joint venture between Tata Steel Limited and the Government of Quebec. Tata Steel, part of the Tata Group of Companies, is one of the world’s top 10 steel producers and a fortune 500 company.The opportunityTata Steel Minerals Canada is currently seeking a Process Operations Trainer to join the Human Resources team to work on a Fly-in/Fly-out basis of 2 weeks On/Off to and from the Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville, QC. Operations at our mine site are running 24/7 all year long. Standard work schedules are of 12 hours per day.Reporting to Site HR Assistant-Manager, the Process Operations Trainer will be responsible for delivery and record management of all processing training respective to the various operational roles of an iron ore processing plant, including control room operation. The incumbent will ensure all Process Plant Operators are fully trained and competent to carry out the functions of their role with regards to safety performance, production goals, legislated regulations, company policies and practices.The main pick-up points are St. John’s, Gander, Deer Lake, Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Wabush in NL, Halifax, NS, Moncton, NB, and Montreal, QC.Major ResponsibilitiesExecute and maintain a Training System to achieve the following outputs:

  • Ensuring Zero Harm to the employees, business, environment and community;
  • Meeting all legislative, corporate, site and job-specific training requirements;
  • Complying with business needs and effectiveness by maintaining a training database.
In order to fulfill the above responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Perform a training needs analysis for all positions at site;
  • Develop training modules, manuals, procedures and presentations;
  • Determine appropriate methods of delivering both knowledge and practical on the job processing operations training including operation of plant mobile equipment such as fork lifts, overhead cranes, aerial lifts, and skid steer loaders, and any other process specific mobile and fixed equipment;
  • Coordinate, schedule and deliver all knowledge and practical on the job training;
  • Schedule the training workday as required to cover off both day and night shift crews;
  • Complete employee competency verification through performance task-based assessments and observations;
  • Coach Process Plant Operators daily to achieve operating area competency;
  • Liaise with Process Plant Supervisors and Managers to communicate employee competence and develop short and long-term employee training plans;
  • Develop a training schedule based on employee competency requirements taking into account operational commitments and employee availability;
  • Supervise Process Plant Operators as required to achieve training goals and results;
  • Maintain a comprehensive training database for every employee at site;
  • Liaise with external agencies and training agencies as required to ensure training meets all regulations as per the NL Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations;
  • Provide safety training to support the Health & Safety department when needed;
  • May be required to support First Nation training provided on site.
In order to fulfill these responsibilities, you will be expected to manage and handle the following working conditions; A fast-paced environment, extreme weather conditions, handling heavy loads, physically demanding, attention to detail, hand-eye co-ordination, combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling. It is to note that you will also be working at heights.Your Profile
  • 5-10 years operating experience in Mineral Processing facility (iron ore processing exp. would be an asset);
  • 3-5 years of experience in a training role with a good understanding and working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Radiation Act, WHMIS Act and Loss Control techniques;
  • Certification and/or proven experience in Adult Education Principles and Training Assessment Program design and implementation would be an asset;
  • Experience in training and working with indigenous people a definite asset;
  • Strong supervisory, leadership, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to develop, plan and schedule programs and activities;
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office software such as Outlook, Power Point, Excel and Word
