About usTata Steel Minerals Canada Limited (TSMC) with its headquarters in Montreal (Quebec), operates iron ore mines in the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec. TSMC is a joint venture between Tata Steel Limited and New Millennium Capital Corp. Tata Steel, part of the Tata Group of Companies, is one of the world’s top 10 steel producers and a Fortune 500 company.The opportunityWe are currently seeking a Safety Advisor to join our highly skilled Health & Safety team to work a 2-week on/off rotation to and from our fly-in/fly-out site in the Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville, QC.The main pick-up points are St. John’s, Gander, Deer Lake in NL, Halifax, NS, Moncton, NB, and Montreal, QC.Reporting to the Senior Manager, Health & Safety, the Safety Advisor is responsible for monitoring worksite to ensure compliance with all Safety Regulations. The position requires the ability to cope with changing circumstances and situations with little supervision.The incumbent will interact with operational personnel, senior managers, and departmental heads throughout the organization. He or She should also foster positive relationships with regulatory authorities, agencies, and service providers outside the organization. Other contacts will be established at a working level as appropriate.Key Responsibilities

  • Models and promotes an organizational culture that fosters safety practices through effective leadership
  • Demonstrates an excellent safety behavior and attitude, follows regulatory practices and rules, recognizes and promotes hazard reporting and ensures effective safety reporting
  • Observes and instructs on safe working practices and security procedures
  • Conducts incident investigations and reports back to appropriate personnel
  • Assesses safety and security hazards and determines immediate corrective actions and recommends long term solutions
  • Provides information on safety issues to the organization’s staff, contractors and stakeholders
  • May represents the organization on government and the industry committees
  • Analyses technical data for trends related to hazards, events, and occurrences
  • Investigates opportunities to increase the efficiency of processes
  • Compiles all safety statistics for the company and subcontractors
Required Qualifications
  • College degree in Organizational Health & Safety or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years safety experience in a mining/processing environment
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Good knowledge of WCB regulations
Preferred Assets
  • Certified NLOHSA (The Newfoundland & Labrador Occupational Health & Safety Association)
  • Advanced First Aid or Industrial First Aid Certification
  • Bilingual (English and French)
  • Certified as a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)
