About usTata Steel Minerals Canada Limited (TSMC) with its headquarters at 1000 Sherbrooke W., Suite 1120, Montreal (Quebec), operates iron ore mines in the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec. TSMC is a joint venture between Tata Steel Limited and the Government of Quebec. Tata Steel, part of the Tata Group of Companies, is one of the world’s top 10 steel producers and a fortune 500 company.The opportunityTata Steel Minerals Canada is currently seeking a Mine Production Supervisor to join the Mining Operations team to work on a Fly-in/Fly-out basis of 3 2/3 weeks On/Off to and from the Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville, QC. Operations at our mine site are running 24/7 all year long. Standard work schedules are of 12 hours per day.The main pick-up points are St. John’s, Gander, Deer Lake, and Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Wabush in NL, Halifax, NS, Moncton, NB, and Montreal, QC.Reporting to the Assistant Manager - Mining Operations the primary focus of this role is to lead a team of operators in the effective operation of the pit ensuring the achievement of objectives including safety, production, quality and statutory requirements.Your previous work history will indicate proven ability to lead a team enforcing high health and safety standards; effective utilization of equipment and personnel, followed by the ability to achieve daily quality and production targetsKey Responsibilities

  • Promote a safe work environment for crew and ensure all tasks are being executed in compliance with company policies and procedures, NL OH&S regulations, and QC OH&S regulations
  • Conduct workplace inspections, safety interactions, and audits as per company guidelines
  • Develop JHA’s for critical tasks outside of normal activities
  • Report and correct unsafe conditions in the work place
  • Accountable for meeting daily production targets
  • Lead daily toolbox talks. Plan, organize, and coordinate the operators’ daily work tasks
  • Prepare daily shift reports
  • Investigate incidents when they occur. Report to Health & Safety and develop/implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Enforce disciplinary actions in accordance with progressive discipline policy
  • Resolve issues and conflict between team members
  • Develop work procedures to manage day-to-day operations safely and productively
  • Monitor equipment availability and work with maintenance to minimize operator downtime
  • Communicating with Processing any changes to ore haulage
  • Collaborate with Geology to determine quality of material in pit
  • Solve any issues pertaining to mining activities and give advice on how to enhance productivity levels
  • Perform competency assessments on direct employees
  • Manage, evaluate, and maximize the employees work performance thru mentoring and coaching
  • Enforce the company’s environmental policies by cleaning up and managing waste
  • Provide back-up coverage for the mining operations management if needed
  • Other tasks as required
Qualifications
  • Minimum high school diploma
  • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience in an open pit mining operation
  • Lead by example to maintain high standards of conduct at work place
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and adapt to changing priorities
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity skills
  • Knowledge of mining equipment
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrate commitment to improving safety practices
  • Ability to prioritize projects and manage time efficiently
  • Conscious of Mining impacts on the Environment and commitment on reporting and addressing any environmental issues
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills
  • Strong English verbal and written communication skills; fluent in French an asset
  • Basic computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
  • Valid driver’s licence class 5
