Job Description

Paraprofessionals may be required to support students with a variety of special needs. This work includes providing support for the behavior, safety, medical and physical needs of a student.A condition of employment as an EA/CYW with the Waterloo Region District School Board requires that one must pass a Physical Demands test. All job offers will be conditional on the candidate passing all components of this test. This applies to any EA/CYW that does not already have Permanent/Term level D hours.Qualifications/Requirements:Educational Assistant Qualification:Must have an EA Diploma OR equivalent college or university degree in a Child Related field (certified teacher, Development Service Worker, Bachelor of Social Work, Social Services Diploma) along with experience working with children.Please note that Thomson Direct correspondence, St. Louis Adult Learning EA and Stratford Career Institute courses are examples of qualifications that will not be accepted.For further clarification, individuals who have an ECE certificate/degree do not meet the Educational qualification requirements for an Educational Assistant. Educational Assistants may be responsible for supporting students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 based on system needs which can change at any time. Under the Early Childhood Educators Act, individuals with an ECE certificate/degree are only permitted to work with children 12 years of younger.Child and Youth Worker Qualification:Must have a CYW/CYC Diploma or equivalent College or University degree in a Child Related field (Bachelor of Social Work or a Masters in Social Work, Ontario Association of Child and Youth Care Certificate-OACYC, Social Services Diploma).Applicants must be willing and have the physical ability to support students with many diverse needs (including toileting/lifting), and have the ability to communicate effectively with staff and students.The rate of pay is in accordance with the collective agreement between the Board and the Educational Assistants Association.Under the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014, S.O. 2014, c. 11, Sched. 1 Ontario Regulation 137/15 for staff screening and police record checks; Employees [DECEs, EAs, CYWs] working in licensed child care programs are required to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check issued by a Police Service on or before every fifth anniversary after the date of the most recent vulnerable sector check. In addition, employees are required to complete an annual offence declaration (annually recorded through the WRDSB staff portal). Educators working in Before and After School Programs are required to complete a request for VSC through your local police service [available online] and submit your original electronic copy to care-staff@wrdsb.ca for review.Employees are required to have a valid first aid and cpr certificate and or be registered to update their training within the year.Recognizing the significant impact that COVID-19 is having on our world and our ways of doing business, the Board recognizes that the recruitment/selection process may need to be modified to ensure individual and community safety.
