Job Description

Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada's largest research and technology organization.We are looking for a Technical Officer in the nanotechnology field to support the Security and Disruptive Technologies Research Centre’s Nano characterization facility. The Technical Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.NRC SDTech maintains national research and technology development facilities in Ottawa. These world-class nano and advanced materials science laboratories feature leading-edge equipment, including precision instrumentation for TGA/DSC with evolving gas analysis, micro-Raman, SEM, a comprehensive suite of nanoparticles size determination, dynamic vapour sorption and a variety of common spectroscopic and chemical analysis tools and techniques that open the door to the nanoscale. The Nano Characterization facility supports several programs and both internal and external clients.The Technical Officer will provide support for the operation and maintenance of a large fleet of characterization instruments; provide analysis reports to clients; provide training on instruments for students and staff; and contribute to SDT and client projects on nanomaterials. He/she will have shared responsibilities for general lab support, ordering supplies and maintaining a safe work environment.Screening CriteriaApplicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:EducationBachelor of Science in Chemistry or Nanochemistry/Nanotechnology or Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering or college diploma in a relevant field. An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.For information on certificates and diplomas issued abroad, please see Degree equivalencyExperienceSignificant experience in a laboratory environment; with inventory and equipment repair.Significant experience with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and auxiliary accessories.Significant experience with Raman spectroscopy, optical microscopy and nanoparticle sizers.Significant experience with instrumentation, data acquisition, data processing and reporting.Significant experience with nanomaterials handling, processing and chemistry.Significant experience with nanocomposites.Experience working with high temperature oven/furnaces would be an asset.Experience working in a project management focused, multidisciplinary research environment would be an asset.NOTE: Significant experience is defined as more than 2 years of continuing hands-on experience in a lab environment plus fundamental theoretical knowledge; Practical experience is more than 1 year of continuous hands-on experience in a lab environment.
