Job Description

Municipality of the County of Pictou Department of Emergency Services Career OpportunityFire Inspector The Municipality of the County of Pictou is inviting applications for one (1) permanent, full-time Fire Inspector position in The Department of Emergency Services with the Municipality of the County of Pictou.Under the direction of the Director of Emergency Services, the Fire Inspector is responsible for implementing and conducting fire inspections for the Municipality of the County of Pictou in accordance with the requirements under the Nova Scotia Fire Safety Act.The Fire Inspector is required to act in unison with other regulatory staff and agencies to ensure compliance with construction, development, and other health and safety-related regulations. The position is appointed Municipal Fire Inspector pursuant to the Nova Scotia Fire Safety Act.The Fire Inspector conducts themselves in a professional, competent manner when representing theMOCP with building owners, tenants, outside agencies and internal service providers.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement and carry out all inspections and deficiency resolution related to fire and life safety in the municipal service area(s), including but not necessarily limited to the Nova Scotia Fire Safety
Act and Regulations, the National Fire Code of Canada, applicable municipal by-laws and other adopted standards and policies.
  • Undertake all mandatory and complaint driven inspections of buildings and developments to determine compliance with statutes and by-laws and annotate corrective actions through correspondence or orders with property owners and others.
  • Undertake all necessary inspections to ensure compliance with the statutes and by-laws and follow up with any appropriate actions.
  • Take appropriate actions with respect to non-complaint fire safety activity, or other actions inconsistent with the statutes and by-laws.
  • Defines occupancy loads for all public buildings and establishments as required by provincial safety regulations, and posts signs stipulating allowable occupancy loads.
  • Provide the services of a Qualified and Certified Fire Inspector and administer the requirements of the Nova Scotia Fire Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Produce regular reports for distribution to the municipal councils, the applicable provincial and federal agencies, and other bodies.
  • Responds to fires only if requested by the respective Fire Chief.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate municipal records and files with respect to fire inspections and re-inspections and non-compliances and ensure that such municipal records and files are kept up to date.
  • Effectively analyze and interpret the Nova Scotia Fire Safety Act and Regulations, and applicable municipal by-laws to ensure the Municipal Fire Inspection System is in provincial compliance.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with other municipal staff, representatives of the senior levels of government, the development industry, and the public.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with developers, contractors, builders, homeowners, and the public on matters related to fire safety.
  • Attend the necessary upgrading and training workshops and seminars required to maintain the minimum certification as a Level I Certified Fire Inspector as required under the Nova Scotia Fire
Safety Act and Regulations and maintain membership in good standing.
  • Respond to inquiries by applicable compliance and/or testing agencies as required.
  • Provide support to provincial fire marshal and/or deputy fire marshals as required.
  • All other related fire safety duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma, Post-secondary education related to fire safety and/or inspection an asset.
  • Minimum level one FIANS certification, with the desire to achieve level two and/or NFPA 1031 certification.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must be able to demonstrate capacity and competency to inspect all buildings, structures, facilities, and occupancies by the National Fire Code of Canada.
  • Valid drivers license.
Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the communities within the Municipality of the County of Pictou.
  • Knowledge of business-related software and technology, i.e., spreadsheets, databases, word processing, email, etc.
Criminal Record Check: Applicants may be required to complete an employment criminal record check.Work Status: Permanent, full time. The anticipated start date for this position will be in October 2022.Hours of Work: Monday-Friday, 35 hours per week with the possibility of overtime, subject to approval by the Director of Emergency Services, and as per the NSGEU collective agreement.Salary: 63,953.33 As per NSGEU Local 60 Collective agreementDiversity pledge: The Municipality is an equal-opportunity employer.
