As a department, we work to promote Nova Scotia as Canada’s premier fish and seafood province.About Our OpportunityUnder the direction of the Manager, Sportfish Management, the Fisheries Biologist is responsible for the formulation, coordination, and implementation of policies and programs directed toward the management of sportfishing within Nova Scotia.Fisheries Biologist will also be responsible for the assessment of sportfish populations, habitats and ecosystems that support sportfish populations and identification and implementation of research priorities that directly relate to sportfish management objectives.Primary AccountabilitiesAs a Fisheries Biologist, you will:

  • manage programs to direct Departmental funding for research initiatives with professors and graduate students at universities throughout Nova Scotia
  • represent the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture on national and international inter-governmental committees, non-government organizations, and fisheries research and management groups.
  • utilize your expertise to advise Managers and Directors to ensure effective delivery of provincial programs, policies, regulations and legislations.
  • fiscally responsible for the development, implementation and reporting of initiatives designed to maximize the wise use of provincial sportfish resources
Majority of your work will require you to work independently with minimal guidance to complete multiple complex projects and supervise field biologists and/or technical staff, as well as supervise and coordinate Fisheries Technicians. Occasionally, you may be involved in the review of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and making recommendation to senior staffs.Qualifications and ExperienceThis may be the right opportunity for you if you possess a Bachelor of Science Degree in biology + 6 years related experience or a Master of Science in Biology + 4 years’ experience.Additionally, you must have:
  • extensive knowledge on recreational fisheries management techniques including resource inventory, stock assessment, and stock enhancement of recreational fisheries.
  • program management skills, including supervisory experience
  • capability to manage multiple people, and highly specialized biological projects with minimal guidance
  • exceptional interpersonal and written and oral communication skills
  • possess leadership and organizational skills
  • an understanding of governmental organizational frameworks and policy development, program planning and delivery.
  • ability to conduct or supervise primary research related to recreational fisheries topics
  • experience in using some of the computer applications, particularly in the areas of word processing, data analysis and manipulations (spreadsheets), statistics, and presentation software
