  • the development and implementation of the province’s recreational fishery management programs through resource assessments, stewardship, licencing, promotion, and programs with an overarching goal of maximizing the economic contribution of the sportfishery.
  • leading a diverse team of professionals in a complex and challenging environment to manage and promote and develop the sportfishery.
  • leading management programs and related initiatives, for all provincially managed species, while ensuring regulatory and program requirements are met through effective stewardship and general human resource, OH&S and budgetary management practices.
  • ensuring sportfish management decisions are based on the best available information, support conservation and sustainability of the fishery resource and are balanced with societal values.
Primary AccountabilitiesAs the Manager, some of the Primary Accountabilities in the role will include:
  • ensuring biological assessments are conducted using scientifically sound techniques and practices.
  • balancing conservation and promotion/development goals and ensure sportfishery resources are used in a sustainable and equitable manner by securing involvement and cooperation of diverse stakeholders through consultation and mediation.
  • managing the delivery of education and outreach initiatives and promote programs designed to grow the sportfishing industry.
  • conceptualizing development opportunities to ensure business, industry and the public understand the importance of protecting, conserving and wise use of the provinces valuable fishery resources.
  • providing input to provincial and national policy, ensuring Nova Scotias interests are represented and promoting the integrated management of freshwater sportfishery resources.
  • providing strategic advice to senior management and the private sector and recommending and initiating the development and implementation of eco-system-based fishery management policies, regulations and strategic initiatives related to the sportfishery. You will also ensure that science-based information and advice is available, accessible, and appropriately disseminated at the local, regional, and national levels.
Qualifications and ExperienceBachelor’s Degree in Science or related degree plus five (5) years of experience working in the field of fisheries management; an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.You must:
  • demonstrate knowledge/understanding of the Fisheries and Coastal Resources and Federal Fisheries Acts, regulations, policies, principles, and practices related to the management of recreational fisheries, and freshwater fish habitat;
  • function within a dynamic and rapidly changing environment and thus be an innovator and collaborator with a focus on action and impact;
  • have effective communication (verbal and written), cultural competency and interpersonal skills for success in this position to effectively lead and manage staff and volunteers;
  • have the ability to build and maintain relationships and partnerships, and to work constructively with peers, researchers, diverse groups of stakeholders including those in business, communities and industry sectors as well as officials at all levels of government ;
  • have solid analytical skills and the ability to work independently and work well under pressure to ensure the delivery of departmental programs and services;
  • have working knowledge of PC based computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, database management and presentation packages
In addition to above, having several years of leadership experience working with freshwater fisheries management, strategic planning, policy and regulation development and issues management will be an asset for this role.Competencies required for this role include Analytical Thinking, Action Management, Team Leadership, Initiative, Effective Interactive Communication, Partnering & Relationship Building and Intercultural & Diversity Proficiency.We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.EquivalencyAn equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.Equivalent experience and training includes, but is not limited to:
  • Minimum 9 years of related experience in the field of fisheries management.

  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.
  • May be required to work overtime on occasion.
