Job Description

Job SummaryThe Carpenter/Civil Maintainer is responsible for performing their work in an efficient and timely manner. The incumbent must adhere to industry standards for installation, repairs, and safety. Decisions on tasks performed by trades will be based on the Red Seal Occupational Analysis.CNL Employees perform all duties in accordance with established health and safety and regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (i.e. utilizing personal protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifies management or supervisor of all occurrences, injuries, illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers or any other on the premises in a timely manner and in accordance with established reporting requirements.QualificationsEducation

  • Must have completed apprenticeship training or equivalent and be qualified as Carpenter with an Interprovincial Red Seal ticket.
Experience
  • Formal training and demonstrated proficiency in the following areas of study:
  • Trade-related Mathematics, Science and Communications.
  • Basic Components of Paint.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Use.
  • Preparation and Application of Interior/Exterior Coatings.
  • Paint Failure: Causes and Prevention.
  • Spray Painting.
  • Fundamentals of Paper Hanging and Wall Coverings.
  • Sketching and Blueprint Reading.
  • Decorative Painting, Stippling, Glazing, Blending, Lining.
  • Wood Finishing.
  • Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariatquot;Standard on Security Screening quot; and thequot;Policy on Government Security quot;.
Abilities and SkillsThe incumbent should have:As per the Manitoba Trades apprenticeship program: (http://www.gov.mb.ca/tce/apprent/mb_trades/index.html)Job/Industry Specific KnowledgeA Certified Carpenter is trained to:
  • Prepare the foundations of buildings;
  • Install beams, girders and footing forms;
  • Build stairs and stair forms;
  • Construct sloped and unequal pitch roofs;
  • Apply wall and ceiling coverings, inside and outside;
  • Install trim, doors, baseboards, moldings, cabinets and other finish carpentry;
  • Lay floors of resilient tile or hardwood strips;
  • Erect and insulate walls, ceilings and floors; and
  • Fireproof beams and columns.
  • Formal training and demonstrated proficiency in the following areas of study:
  • Mathematics, Science and Communications related to the trade;
  • Hand Tools and Safety;
  • Roof Framing (equal and unequal pitch);
  • Concrete Forming and Foundations;
  • General Framing and Heavy Timber Construction;
  • Stair Building, Cabinet Layout and Construction;
  • Carpentry in Masonry Construction;
  • Estimating, Blueprint Reading and Drafting;
  • Initiative and judgement to organize and maintain flow of work and accuracy of records;
  • Must be punctual, dependable and safety minded;
  • Detail oriented with the ability to meet deadlines;
  • Exceptional organizational skills, able to prioritize and time management is required;
  • Ability to understand detailed information is essential;
  • Demonstrates responsibility and is accountable for accurately handling the details associated with one #39;s work;
  • Conscientious about accuracy;
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and response with initiative;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and proven ability to maintain successful working relations at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders; and
  • Highly motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Able to work extended hours and off normal work shifts to support project needs
Functions and ResponsibilitiesFunctions and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use and application of applicable codes, regulations, and by-laws;
  • Good comprehension skills to interpret drawings and code specifications;
  • Willingness to keep up with new developments in the trade;
  • Keep up-to-date with new developments in technology;
  • Work from drawings and sketches as required, able to provide material take-offs and labour estimates;
  • Read, interpret engineering drawings and weld to the engineering specifications as outlined;
  • Good planning and organizational abilities;
  • Effective communication skills, especially when working with customers;
  • Teamwork skills when working on large projects with co-workers;
  • Work proficiently in a variety of assigned tasks;
  • Highly motivated and able to work with a minimum of supervision;
  • Problem solving abilities to change installation techniques to on-site working conditions;
  • Experience in a wide variety of industrial work environments;
  • Physical agility necessary to perform all aspects of the work;
  • Physical stamina to stand for long periods of time, work in awkward or cramped confined locations;
  • Strength and the ability to work at heights on construction and industrial sites;
  • Work on scaffolds, ladders and mobile lifts;
  • Eye-hand coordination and dexterity and their ability to plan and think sequentially as well as three-dimensionally;
  • Manual dexterity required to perform precision work;
  • Knowledge of metallurgy and the effectiveness of the equipment being used;
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools; and, their ability to determine the most appropriate means of proceeding with the work;
  • Determine how equipment operates by looking at a diagram or blueprint;
  • Able to wear and work in protective clothing including respirators;
  • Mechanical ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment; and
  • Maintains confidentiality in all matters.
