Job Description

Are you looking for a role that will challenge youWould you like to make a difference in the EnvironmentIf you answered yes, our Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) site located near Pinawa, Manitoba is looking for an Environmental Specialist - onsite. The Environmental Specialist will ensure site compliance to environmental laws, regulations, and best practices by overseeing project and operational activities and enforcing corrective action. Environmental Specialist will s provide oversight and support the CNL effluent and environmental monitoring programs and seek to improve site emissions. Communicating to various staff, clients, managers, stakeholders, and Indigenous peoples through written or verbal reports is a key function of this role. Does this pique your interest If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you!What will you be doingThe Environmental Specialist assists the Environmental Protection Program Manager (WL) with full implementation of CNL #39;s Environmental Management System (EMS) at WL, based on ISO 14001 principles.

  • Coordinating all internal, external ISO 14001 audits and compliance evaluations.
  • Developing and updating Environmental Aspect Assessment reports.
  • Gathering and evaluating site radiological/non-radiological effluent monitoring results.
  • Helping to diagnose the cause of excursions, promoting improvement, issuing letters or memos, reporting EMS performance, and writing summary reports as requested.
  • Watching for situations that could cause unwanted releases, encouraging prevention, and investigating releases if they occur.
  • Providing specialist support to facility managers, to help ensure that management #39;s responsibilities related to environmental protection are fulfilled.
  • Keeping Facility Manager and the Environmental Protection Program Manager informed of the report finding and implications.
  • Contributing to the Annual Compliance Monitoring Report to help ensure it is issued to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) by April 30 each year.
  • Preparing and issuing the Annual Environmental Monitoring Report to CNSC by June 30 each year.
  • Supporting project teams as assigned.
  • Delivering training to internal staff.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.
What we are looking for:Someone who has the ability to:
  • Good written, computer and oral communication skills.
  • Well versed in applicable federal, provincial and municipal regulations to help maintain continuous compliance.
  • Become familiar with the requirements of CNL #39;s Environmental Management System; this knowledge would be considered an asset for a potential new employee.
  • Working knowledge of radiation protection principles.
  • Candidates must be willing to undertake and successfully complete formal and on-the-job CNL Radiation Protection training relevant to this position.
  • Mature, well-organized individual, who enjoys working with a team in an operational and decommissioning setting.
  • A keen sense of individual responsibility, and strong motivation to achieve group goals.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees, tenants and facility management alike and able to present recommendations in a lucid and effective manner.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines.
Experience
  • A very good understanding of environmental management principles is essential.
  • Familiarity with various environmental monitoring techniques would also be very useful.
Education
  • University degree in Environmental Studies or related scientific disciplines (including Physics and Chemistry) is required, in order to understand, interpret and convey the causes and environmental consequences of human activities.
  • Less education, together with at least ten years of equivalent post- educational experience in environmental management may be considered.
Security Eligibility Requirement
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 (three) years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom.
Working Conditions:
  • Must be willing to inspect and work anywhere on the WL site, and at any time. This is an operational and decommissioning environment (i.e.; laboratories, workshops, water and wastewater management, nuclear operations, and construction and demolition areas).
  • Travel to other sites to attend meetings may be required.
  • A heavy workload that requires good knowledge of environmental hazards and responsibilities.
