Job Description

Position OverviewJob Title: Resource Planning ManagerLocation: Remote (within the US)Job Type: Full Time, 8:30 AM-5:30 PM PSTStrategen Consulting is seeking a Resource Planning Manager to lead and support consulting projects for public and private sector clients focused on evaluating the role and value of clean energy solutions, with a special emphasis on green hydrogen, renewables and energy storage, clean transportation, etc.This is a full-time, remote position. Candidates must be US citizens located within the United States and able to work standard Pacific Time hours, Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm.Responsibilities:Client Project Execution:

  • Assist Strategen’s consulting practice by managing execution of client projects with a primary focus on energy planning, including resource planning, integrated grid planning, distribution planning, gas sector planning and decarbonization, and asset evaluation
  • Lead projects relating to grid planning or energy system planning, including technical exercises that include production cost modeling, capacity expansion modeling, power flow analysis, or similar. Provide an interface between technical subject matter experts on modeling and grid planning and less technical stakeholders such as regulators, corporate executives, or other Strategen team members
  • Lead coordination and collaboration across project team to manage the execution of written and technical work within the context of overall client project goals; provide leadership and guidance to junior staff on execution of project work; ensure timely delivery of project deliverables and communicate issues as they arise
  • Lead development of deliverables used to communicate findings from aforementioned technical exercises, including power point presentations or written reports
  • Communicate succinctly, accessibly, and effectively on highly technical topics
  • Contextualize technical and analytical findings within broader project objectives, and be able to provide technical guidance and direction to the project team in order to meet broader project objectives
  • Develop roadmaps, recommendations, transition plans or other actionable plans to enable structured achievement of energy sector decarbonization goals based on the results of modeling exercises and clean energy imperatives such as policy or self-identified decarbonization goals
  • Oversee research on energy or related market structures, regulations or tariffs; grid planning studies or related assessments, including integrated resource plans; and representations of emerging or mature technologies in technical studies, including new applications and use cases. Summarize research via memo or presentation and communicate research to internal and external audiences with varying levels of technical expertise. Interpret research to develop insights into recommendations, best practices, gaps, or other next steps based on technical analyses
  • Support or lead engagement on regulatory proceedings focused on grid or energy systems planning. Draft memos, comments, and expert testimony to support client positions in regulatory cases related to grid or energy systems planning. As needed, provide expert witness testimony for regulatory proceedings and hearings. Review and interpret comments or testimony submitted in regulatory proceedings and develop arguments with evidence that can either support or rebut the issues
  • Serve as a technical expert for other Strategen team members to scope and execute client project requests
  • Develop insights into the economic, technical, and policy implications of various energy resource proposals
  • Conduct qualitative and/or quantitative market analysis to understand market trends and company-specific information related to the topic areas of retail rate design, wholesale markets, clean energy technologies, etc.
  • Conduct quantitative analysis to understand the economics of different strategies and business models, and the value proposition/economics of clean energy technologies in various retail and wholesale energy markets. As needed, supervise development of quantitative assessment tools and ensure staff capability to use
  • Supervise team members and individual contributors on projects, ensuring quality work product is efficiently delivered and coordinated with overall project objectives
  • Execute efficiently and consistent with engagement budgets
  • Receive and respond to constructive feedback on client materials and project work with professionalism
Client Relationships and Business Development:
  • Diagnose problems that prospective clients may have and offer potential solutions
  • Assist Strategen team members in scoping and providing clarity on client project requests, which may be ambiguous
  • Help prepare senior team members for client meetings and presentations
  • Collaborate with team members in scoping and writing proposals for clients and responding to client requests
  • Build relationships with existing and potential clients
  • Build relationships with technical and analytical practitioners in the energy ecosystem, including academia, national labs, modeling tool developers and other modeling consultancies
  • Understand client needs and objectives to tailor client engagement and support
  • Attend industry events and conferences to present and network
  • Identify key areas of uncertainty with respect to technical work needed to complete client projects.
  • Write technical scopes of work clearly
Thought Leadership:
  • Develop and provide deep insights into how to transform the power system quickly and in an equitable manner
  • Provide technical expertise and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences related to power system planning and operations, green hydrogen, and business model enablers.
  • Build specialized technical expertise in emerging or areas of focus for the consulting team, including distributed energy resources, long-duration storage, and green hydrogen technologies and markets.
  • Promote solutions created to industry problems associated with grid transformation through preparing abstracts and presentations for conferences/webinars or drafting white papers
Team Support:
  • Support growth and development of the Strategen consulting team by helping to mentor and educate junior staff on energy market fundamentals, policy developments, and other relevant topics
  • Help the team with general operational tasks and internal projects for organizational improvement as needed
Time Management:
  • Self-manage time and workload and communicate regularly with your supervisor and other members of the team to manage expectations about timing and quality of work. Ensure timely delivery of project deliverables and communicate issues as they arise
  • Prioritize between multiple competing internal and external demands to ensure successful delivery across a portfolio of projects
Professional Development:
  • Work with manager to craft a professional development plan, independently explore creative solutions to problems related to energy transition, and proactively work to improve targeted skillsets and grow subject matter knowledge
Education, Experience and Skills Requirements and Preferences:
  • Bachelor’s degree in energy/environmental studies, economics, engineering, operations research, financial modeling, energy resources, mathematics, physics, or relevant area
  • Graduate degree in similar relevant area preferred
  • 4-6 years of business strategy, regulatory, clean energy, or consulting experience, or equivalent postgraduate experience, required
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working in the energy sector, preferably in a regulatory environment with experience writing or assisting with testimony or comments
  • Direct experience developing or operating grid planning models including production cost modeling, capacity expansion modeling, price dispatch models, or power flow models, strongly preferred
  • Advanced topical knowledge in one or more the following areas is preferred: integrated resource planning, transmission planning, distribution planning, cost of service modeling, asset valuation, cost-benefit analysis, and/or wholesale market design
  • Experience with policy and regulatory engagement; examples: working with diverse internal and industry stakeholders to develop stakeholder/intervenor comments in state regulatory commissions, state energy offices, or the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
  • Familiarity with the fundamentals of energy policy & markets, grid planning and electric business models
  • Excellent skills with MS Word and PowerPoint required; Proficiency in Excel preferred
  • Familiarity with electric tariff rate design or basic power system engineering knowledge preferred
  • Knowledge of grid technologies & clean energy resources; examples: green hydrogen, energy storage, solar PV, wind, electric vehicles, grid modernization
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the development, finalization, and delivery of high-quality presentations and reports
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently when required
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively problem solve
  • Excellent organizational skills; detailed oriented
  • Able to manage and coordinate multiple tasks and projects accurately
