About Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN)The Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN), or the T’exelcemc (people of WLFN) have belonged to the Secwepemc (or Shuswap) Nation for over 6500 years. Today, the WLFN community includes a growing population of over 800 registered members who live on reserve in Sugar Cane, in nearby Williams Lake, BC, and across the globe. One of 17 Secwepemc nations forming Secwepemculecw, the greater stewardship land area extends from Shuswap Lake in the south to Quesnel Lake in the north, and from Columbia-Kootenay Range in the east to the Alexis Creek area in the west. Since time immemorial, our Kukpi7s (Chiefs) led a strong people, and they do so today.We are Culturally Centered, Future Focused.JOB SUMMARYUnder the direction of the Recreation Manager, the Recreation Worker will be responsible for assisting the recreation department in planning, organizing, and delivering a variety of recreational programs and activities for children, youth, and adults in the community of Williams Lake First Nation. The job will require you to ensure all aspects of the recreational program are running smoothly and effectively. This entry-level temporary summer position is scheduled for 35 hours per week for 6 weeks, Monday to Friday from 09:00 am-05:00 pm. There are two (2) positions available open until September 03, 2021.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESAssisting in the After school Program, Youth Leadership Programs as well as in Community programming.After school program activities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting the drop in center for ages 6-12
  • Assisting in cultural programing and field trips such as but not limited to: sage picking, making pitch medicine, canning, making Indian Tea, and so forth.
  • Assisting in community and off community field trips and events such as day trips to waterfalls, hiking tips, going to other bands and communities and so forth.
  • Sports such as soccer, volleyball, badminton, baseball, floor hockey and so forth.
Youth Leadership program activities include but are not limited to:
  • Assisting in drop in center for ages 12-18

All staff is expected to be team-oriented and maintain the confidentiality of all information gained while working with the organization.QUALIFICATIONS:Eligibility:The eligibility criteria are as follows:Must be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;Must be enrolled in High School or full-time post-secondary and return to school in September.Knowledge:Knowledge of Microsoft Office software at a beginner level will be an asset.Understanding First Nations' history, culture, and language would be an asset.Preferred Skills and Abilities:Being physically activeExceptional customer service skillsExcellent verbal and written communication skills with strong problem-solving skills.Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.Operates as part of a team and is flexible about the boundaries and functions of the job.Maintains professionalism in all circumstances.Recognizes and respects all cultural diversity and understands Indigenous culture.WORKING CONDITIONSThis position requires physical hands-on work such as setting up and taking down recreational equipment and participating with youth in supporting activities.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, and hear.The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions.
