Successful applicants will enjoy a competitive salary, medical and dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan, relocation privileges and opportunities for training and career advancement.The Wildlife Technician II assists and supports the Wildlife Biologist II (Biologist) to plan, develop, initiate, analyze and report on field, laboratory, and harvest studies on species within Nunavut’s mandate. The Technician also assists in the development of management plans, consultations, technical publications, reports, conservation, education, and administration.Under the direction of the Biologist, this key support position enables the research and management initiatives required to identify total allowable harvest levels, population boundaries (map range) and potential impacts of development activities on wildlife and wildlife habitat by providing logistic, field, laboratory, administrative, clerical and analytical support to regional research and management initiatives.The incumbent takes the lead in collecting data on total allowable harvests, population boundries, abundance, reproduction, mortality, behavior, habitat, prey, development impacts, human harvest, and health of wildlife as a basis for management concern; Assists in the Administration of the Department’s land use referral system, wildlife research permit system, and resident hunter surveys by reviewing, preparing, entering and analyzing and updating and maintaining applications and requests in the computerized databases on the land-use applications; Prepares management study reports and publications; Conducts laboratory analysis of specimens and tabulates results for interpretation; Perform other related duties as required by Regional Biologist and/or Manager Wildlife Research may assign. Travel is often by boat, ATV, snowmobile, helicopter, or single engine fixed-wing aircraft. The incumbent is often required to stand or walk in outside situations including extreme cold, deep snow or ice conditions, extreme amount of mosquitos, move heavy equipment such as snowmobiles and carry equipment (60 ibs).The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through Technical Diploma in Renewable Resources or a related discipline plus 2 years related expierience. This training is required to enable the technician to understand scientific principles, perform statistical analysis of field data, and complete projects with a minimum level of supervision. Minimum requirements (Mandatory) for this postion will have a clecan criminal record in order to handle immobilization drugs and must be eligible for PAL to be able to handle restricted and non-restricted firearms. Equivalencies consisting of a combinationg of education, knowledge, skills and abilities equal to the formal education and experience requirements will be considered.In keeping with Article 23 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement…special consideration” will be given to candidates who fulfill these criteria:

  • Specific job skills listed in this description will be complemented by an awareness and sensitivity to the rerquirement for reflecting Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit in all departmental initiatives.
  • Knowledge of Inuit culture, society and economy.
  • Communityawareness.
  • Fluency in Inuktitut.
Skills to be considered an asset:
  • The ability to communicate in two or more of the official languages of Nunavut is an asset.
  • Experience in wilderness travel and survival skills.
  • First Aid & CPR certification.
  • WHMIS 2015 certification.
