Job Description

We offer a collaborative and dynamic workplace where our values of Trustworthy, Transparent, Respectful, and Collaborative guide our conduct and contribute to a healthy culture.As an integral part of the Countys Regional Fire Service Administrative Team and working out of the Sexsmith and Clairmont fire stations, the role of the District Fire Chief is to direct, manage and facilitate all firefighting, fire prevention/education, training, and inspection/maintenance programs for the assigned stations. This will be accomplished by utilizing a core of competent Station Captains and Lieutenants through a collaborative process to facilitate organizational goals. This positions primary responsibility is for the Fire halls in the Town of Sexsmith, Bezanson, LaGlace, Hythe, and Teepee Creek although duties will require working with all stations and agency partners.You will bring proven abilities as a strong communicator, operationally experienced incident command and risk management and problem-solving skills. The incumbent should have at least 8-10 years experience in a composite fire service with knowledge and skills in fostering and maintaining positive relationships and working closely with volunteer officers and firefighters. As part of the operational officers group the District Chief is expected to take part in a rotational Duty Chief role. This role will provide incident command for major incidents with an expectation of monitoring most calls to ensure they are resourced appropriately as per dispatch protocols. The District Fire Chief is required to analyze and consult with the Chiefs group and Town of Sexsmith CAO, in developing recommendations for the protection of life and property within the Town and County.Administrative duties include planning, directing, and controlling activities of the stations, including recruitment and retention and overall morale of personnel, input into the purchase of equipment, control of expenditures, preparation of budget estimates, and the assignment of personnel and equipment. Ensure all applicable reporting, legislative compliancy and departmental policies are implemented and adhered to. The incumbent must exercise considerable independent judgment and action in carrying out assignments in accordance with departmental policies, plans, and objectives and apply risk management process to issues related to the fire department safety, liability exposure and loss control, ensuring services are consistent with the level of service authorized by County and Town Councils and reflect the needs of the communities.The position requires the ability to work in highly stressful situations and dynamic ever-changing environments with other professionals. The ability to prioritize daily workloads to accomplish service goals is expected. The incumbent will have to maintain a flexible schedule that allows for the addressing of the needs of volunteer firefighters as well as career and administrative personnel.The District Chief is expected to balance a role that provides administrative and operational assistance and support to three County and one Town fire station. Preference will be given to candidates that are willing to reside in or near the Town of Sexsmith.At a minimum, the successful candidate will have:

  • Certified post-secondary education at a recognized educational institute (minimum 2-yeardiploma) in the areas of administration leadership, human resources management and/or other related areas. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of progressively more responsible experience in a fire fighting environment including demonstrated supervision of firefighters. Five years of which will in the position of Captain or higher.
  • Sound experience in training needs assessment and the preparation and delivery of training courses and programs for firefighters and officers
  • Experience recruiting and retaining volunteers
  • Valid AB drivers license Class 3, with Air Brake Endorsement required and acceptable drivers abstract.
  • The ability to obtain a clear criminal records report and vulnerable sector report from the RCMP.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated report writing and public speaking abilities.
  • Technical fire operation qualifications as outlined in the job description as well as the ability to respond to incidents outside regular working hours and provide leadership and mentorship as well as direct activities (as necessary) at incidents
  • Ability to ensure that all equipment is properly maintained, inspected and appropriate records kept for equipment at all assigned fire stations
  • Excellent relationship building skills to liaise with partner fire departments, industry, government, other appropriate agencies, and other County and Town staff to achieve their respective objectives
  • Champion physical and mental fitness for firefighters and actively participate in a regular fitness regime.

This is a permanent full-time 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday position with flexibility and/or additional hours to attend training night/meet operational needs.The expectation of this position is to assume a rotational role as duty officer.The County of Grande Prairie recognizes and values the principles of fair hiring practices.
