Job Description

Reproduction & Data FacilitatorThere is a strong internal candidate for this position.The Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence (LFCE) is a unique complex of both science and field laboratories that model all aspects of raising livestock on the Canadian Prairies. The LFCE encompasses everything from forage development, grazing management and environmental sustainability to the science of reproduction and nutrition, cow-calf, bison, cervid, and equine management and feedlot cattle health, growth and productivity.The LFCE is a leader in developing research, teaching and technology transfer programs that provide the livestock and forage industries of Saskatchewan and Canada with new tools and techniques for healthy, sustainable and competitive growth. The LFCE includes livestock facilities (Beef Cattle Research & Teaching Unit, Forage and Cow-Calf Research & Teaching Unit, and Goodale Research Farm), and a large base of forage production and grazing land all near Saskatoon, SK. The Centre’s research focuses on the following key areas: cow-calf production; intensive livestock production; forage, pasture and grazing management; and, bison, cervid, and equine management, nutrition, and reproduction.The LFCE provides researchers, faculty, students, producers and the agriculture industry with an innovative, broad-based platform for research, teaching and extension activities.Primary Purpose: The primary purpose of the position is to provide leadership to the reproduction and data management programs at the LFCE as they relate to the cow-calf operation, replacement heifers, bulls, and bison. The position is also a key element in the LFCE’s support of the work encompassed by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) IntegrOmes Program. In addition to ensuring adherence to industry codes of practice and participation in industry programs, the position seeks to maximize productivity and efficiencies within the LFCE cow-calf, replacement heifer, bull, and bison operations. The management and interpretation of data produced through day-to-day operations and research carried out at the LFCE are key elements in moving the LFCE in the direction of its goals with a focus on continuous improvement. The position will develop and lead the implementation of systematic artificial insemination use at the LFCE. The position will work closely with the Head of Operations, Lab & Feedlot Facilitator, Research Facilitator, General Manager and Director to ensure efficient and optimal use of resources and delivery of programs.Nature of Work: Reporting to the General Manager, the Reproduction & Data Facilitator is a member of the management team directly involved with planning and development of the strategic direction of the Livestock & Forage Centre of Excellence as it relates to cow-calf, replacement heifer, bull, and bison programs as well as the CFI IntegrOmes Program. The position requires close collaboration with faculty and research scientists, extension specialists and instructional staff. The position collaborates with and provides leadership to the management team to ensure the cow-calf, replacement heifer, bull, and bison reproduction programs are productive, efficient, and profitable while maintaining an excellent health status. The position will collaborate with the General Manager on budgets, expense tracking and programmatic costs to ensure fiscal responsibility, particularly with significant issues resulting in potential large expenditures. In collaboration with the Head of Operations, the position provides input with respect to staff placement to meet the operational needs across the LFCE. The position communicates with the Director, General Manager, Head of Operations, Research Facilitator, and Lab and Feedlot Facilitator to ensure the LFCE operates as a collaborative Centre of Excellence. The Reproduction and Data Facilitator ensures compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, animal care guidelines, University policies, standard operating procedures, and research protocols while being a flagship with respect to animal husbandry, handling, and bio security. The position collaborates with the management team to ensure delivery of educational efforts for those internal and external to the University through labs, demonstrations, workshops, field days, and extension events. The Reproduction and Data Facilitator ensures enrollment in industry supported programs as appropriate and will develop and lead the implementation of systematic artificial insemination use at the LFCE. In collaboration with the Research Facilitator, the Reproduction and Data Facilitator will provide leadership with respect to the selection of sires for both natural service and artificial insemination at the LFCE.This position works in a complex environment involving the management of varied livestock species and facilitation of programs through a multi-level organization. The Reproduction & Data Facilitator requires discretion, tact, professionalism and a commitment to continuous improvement. Decisions regarding routine purchases of goods and services, prioritization, problem solving, and scheduling of day-to-day activities and requirements are made independently. The position provides a critical advising role to the General Manager with respect to extensive projects and significant issues.Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

  • Provide Leadership and Guidance to the Livestock & Forage Centre of Excellence Reproduction Programs:
  • Accountable for the management of reproduction programs and associated records within the LFCE cow-calf, replacement heifer, bull, and bison programs.
  • Lead the development and implementation of systematic artificial insemination use at the LFCE.
  • Collaborate with the Research Facilitator to provide leadership in sire selections.
  • Set production benchmarks, define metrics, and ensure programs reach defined goals to maximize productivity and efficiencies with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with Researchers and Research Facilitator to ensure cooperation between research and production programs.
  • Collaborate with Research Facilitator and Veterinarians to provide leadership in herd health and management programs.
  • Ensure optimal use of technology in reproduction and production programs.
  • Provide leadership in the use of programs for teaching and extension purposes.
  • Collaborate with Head of Operations and Research Facilitator to provide leadership and assistance with calving as required.
  • Ensure all practices within the program are carried out in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and Canadian Council of Animal Care Guidelines.
  • Participate as part of the LFCE management team that strives to build and grow an excellent research and teaching center through collaboration with the Director, General Manager, Head of Operations, Lab & Feedlot Facilitator, and Research Facilitator.
  • In collaboration with the Head of Operations and Research Facilitator, assess and communicate needs to ensure the allocation of resources (both people and equipment) to meet operational, research, teaching, and extension commitments within the program.
  • Communicate equipment and facility maintenance needs to the Head of Operations as required to ensure that the facilities and assets are kept in good working order.
  • Independently prioritize emerging issues and apply problem solving.
  • Purchase equipment, supplies, and services as required for the effective operation of the LFCE.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Operations to ensure that all operations within the program are performed effectively, efficiently, and in a cost-effective manner.
  • In collaboration with the General Manager and Head of Operations, write, reference, and ensure adherence to research, operating, and safety protocols and recommend improvements as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with other units, contractors, and partners internal and external to the University.
  • Liaise with industry, build, and maintain relationships with external partners and industry personnel.
  • Embody best practices and direct the participation in industry supported programs
  • Provide Leadership and Guidance to the Livestock & Forage Centre of Excellence Cow-Calf, Replacement Heifer, Bull Data Management Programs:
  • Accountable for the management of data within the LFCE cow-calf, replacement heifer, bull, and bison programs.
  • Ensure meticulous and clear documentation of production, health, and research data.
  • Management, interpretation, and reporting of production and health data produced through day-to-day operations and research carried out at the LFCE.
  • Management of Cattlemax database, for both Cattle and Bison, for herd management purposes
  • Implement processes to capture and manage data produced during the life cycle of animals such as DNA parentage testing, registrations, sire and dam performance, body condition scores, weaning weights, cow weights, herd health, animal identification, and other performance indicators.
  • Ensure enrollment in industry supported programs to generate information and data to set an example for producers.
Support the Research Work Encompassed within the Canadian Institute for Innovation IntegrOmes Project:
  • Provide technical leadership with data a sample collections including work involving, but not limited to, artificial insemination, in-vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, oocyte competence, and semen handling and preservation.
  • Support work and sample collections related to the establishment of the Bison Genome Biobank.
  • Facilitate working relationships with researchers to support and promote the expansion of relevant industry driven applied research.
  • Participate as a member of the scientific team as appropriate to ensure research protocols are designed to be successfully carried out within the program.
  • Collaborate with researchers to ensure the LFCE meets their needs.
  • Provide leadership with process development around work within the research programs.
  • Ensure operations are progressive and follow best practices to position the LFCE as a major industry resource for technology development and applied research.
Education: Relevant post-secondary education or a combination of training and experience. Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.Experience: A minimum of five years of livestock management experience relevant to this position: experience in the care and safe handling of cattle and bison is required; experience in the management of reproductive programs is required; proficiency in the use of PC computer systems and Microsoft Office software is required; a good understanding of Canadian Council of Animal Care guidelines as well as health, safety and environment protocols is required; experience in the management and interpretation of data is an asset; and experience in a research environment is an asset.Skills:
  • Demonstrated competency in the care, reproduction, and handling of cattle and bison.
