Job Description

A Camp based field sampling technician position is currently open with NRS at a SAGD facility in Northern Alberta. This position entails sampling various sample points throughout the plant and field, including sour gases, sour liquids, emulsions, and water. Note that this work is conducted outdoors throughout the entire year. Some testing will also be conducted as required as well as some basic lab work. Attention to detail in this work is critical.This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to drug and alcohol testing as well as a fit for work assessment. Due to the H2S gas, on site work is conducted with a partner. The ability to work as part of a team and with a partner on an ongoing basis is an absolute necessity.Services/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform sampling tasks throughout the plant site, field and off sites to support critical and core analysis for operations, ensuring these samples are representative of the source.
  • Carry out routine and non-routine lab sampling and perform data entry.
  • May also be required to maintain all Operations satellite labs by ensuring instruments are calibrated.
  • Provide additional support by assisting in the lab with routine lab testing whenever their primary sampling tasks have been completed and/or laboratory workload is not able to be maintained due to vacations/increased project workloads etc
  • Trouble shoot process/sampling issues
  • Look for and lead efforts to improve processes and procedures as it relates to the position
  • Support lab operation, safety and environmental systems
  • Support stake holders on projects, R&D and operations optimization
  • Perform routine and non-routine chemical and physical analysis as requested/required
  • Data entry as needed
  • Sample login into SampleManager
  • Communicate with Operations on plant issues impacting sampling and safety
  • Ensure proper safety protocols are in place and in practice when performing duties
  • Identify issues that impact safety, environment and/or production
  • Report any safety issues that come up and help contribute to ideas for avoiding accidents and improving overall safety
  • Shipping for Lab group, ensuring TDG requirements are met, proper labeling/cost coding is documented on COCs, etc
  • Clean sampling containers (cylinders) to prevent contamination
  • Train new Sampling Technician’s on sampling protocols and procedures
  • Ensure proper communication and documentation occurs with cross shift (crossover notes, etc.)

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • High School diploma
  • Team oriented and self-motivated in a dynamic environment
  • Strong mechanical skills, and proven decision-making ability
  • Subject to the requirements of alcohol and drug policy, including pre-assignment screening, as this is a safety sensitive position
  • Subject to a criminal record check
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license-Subject to the requirements of alcohol and drug policy, including pre-assignment screening, as this is a safety sensitive position
  • Previous Lab Work is an Asset but is not required
  • Previous Sampling experience is an Asset but not required
  • Familiarity within the oil or gas industry
  • Excellent time management, interpersonal, documentation and organizational skills
  • Proficient with standard software including LIMS, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. is preferred
  • experience in the SAGD industry and understanding this process would be an asset
  • High safety standards
