Job Description

Join the City of Medicine Hat as an HVAC Technician Permanent, Full time, On SiteJoin our team and make a meaningful impact in the City of Medicine Hat! As an HVAC Technician you will play a crucial role in maintaining, optimizing, and ensuring the reliable operation of the City #39;s Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. This is a hands-on opportunity to work across a variety of City facilities, applying your technical expertise to keep essential systems running smoothly and in compliance with industry standards.   • Perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment replacement for HVAC systems.
  • Monitor and manage building automation systems (BAS) to maintain optimal working environments and ensure compliance with regulatory codes (ASHRAE, ABSA, Alberta Building and Fire Codes).
  • Apply project management skills to capital and operational projects, including estimating costs, supervising worksites, and authorizing progress payments.
  • Identify and recommend equipment for lifecycle replacement and assist with budget planning.
  • Perform routine water treatment tests on open and closed systems.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the Facilities Management group and other City departments.
  • Review contractor work to ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Maintain technical documentation, including work management software (WMS), facility inventory, and certifications.
  • Ensure all work meets or exceeds regulatory code requirements and aligns with occupational health and safety standards.
  • Respond to after-hour emergency call-outs as required.
What you bring
  • Extensive knowledge of HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, air handlers, and related mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in building management systems (BMS/BAS) and control systems, including Direct Digital Control (DDC) and Pneumatics.
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, instrumentation, and technical documentation.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to colleagues and contractors.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications, including Microsoft Office and specialized facility systems.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize work assignments effectively.
Qualifications
  • Possess a valid Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Journeyman Certificate in Alberta (or equivalent with Interprovincial Red Seal).
  • 4th Class Power Engineer Certification or higher is considered an asset.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver #39;s Licence with a satisfactory Driver #39;s Abstract.
  • Ability to obtain a valid government-approved CFC/HCFC/HFC Handling certificate.
  • Current or ability to obtain certifications in Emergency First Aid, CPR, TDG, WHMIS, Fall Protection, Elevated Work Platform, and Confined Space Entry.
  • An equivalent combination of management-approved training and experience may be considered.
