Job Description

Join the City of Medicine Hat as a Senior Accounting AssistantTemporary (Up to 12 months), Full time, On SiteJoin a collaborative team where your expertise in accounting makes a difference! At the City of Medicine Hat, we are committed to delivering excellence in public service, fostering a constructive work culture, and providing sound financial stewardship for our community. We are seeking a Senior Accounting Assistant to play a key role in maintaining fiscal accountability, providing accurate financial information to Directors and Managers, and supporting the ongoing success of our Finance Department. Your key responsibilities

  • Support the preparation and ensure accuracy of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial documents, including operating, capital, and cash flow reports.
  • Assist departmental staff by providing financial data for variance analysis, projections, and grant-funded program reporting.
  • Review and approve journal vouchers, perform monthly account reconciliations, and initiate correcting entries as necessary.
  • Maintain the general ledger, update the ERP system (including setting up new accounts, projects, and work orders), and ensure chart of accounts compliance.
  • Assist in preparing annual operating and capital budgets, including developing templates, balancing documents, and updating the ERP system.
  • Provide accounting guidance to staff across departments and support internal control audits (e.g., petty cash, departmental cash procedures).
  • Prepare year-end working papers, assist with external audits, complete Statistics Canada reports, and contribute to research and technical project support.
  • Deliver training to staff on ERP-related financial processes and provide vacation relief for accounting team members as needed.
What you bring
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Initiative, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills in financial environments.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP, IFRS, PSAB, and transaction controls.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, general ledger reporting tools, and ERP systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey financial information clearly.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality internal customer service and fostering a positive work culture.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a diploma in Business Administration (majoring in Accounting) or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of progressive experience in an accounting environment.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, IFRS, PSAB accounting principles, and financial transaction controls.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, ERP systems, and general ledger reporting tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex financial information clearly, maintain effective working relationships, and provide excellent service to internal customers.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
