Job Description

You will work with a highly engaged CEO that was recognized as one of Canada’s top dynamic CEO’s of 2021.We are looking for a senior financial leader that has hands on experience building an organization from the ground up and is excited about doing it again.The Controller has financial oversight for Willow Lake Métis Association (WLMA) which includes multiple entities including Willow Lake Métis Nation and Willow Lake Métis Group. The Controller is responsible for aligning financial reserves and for identifying concrete ways to engage in increasing financial reserves and cost-savings, such that WLMA and its entities develop into stable, sustainable organizations.Core Responsibilities

  • Actively manage the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of WLMA and it’s entities.
  • Serve as internal consultant to the CEO, COO, Board, and other key stakeholders on all financial matters, making recommendations and suggesting pro-active strategies to keep WLMA and its entities on track;
  • Provide oversight for and management of budgeting and forecast processes and stewarding and reporting on internal financial plans;
  • Support accounting, general ledger and operations functions, ensuring that systems are in place to guarantee timeliness and accuracy;
  • Drive best financial practices within WLMA by publicizing standard operating procedures, keeping the senior leadership team, Board and staff up-to-date on WLMA’s financial status and by generally serving as a point of reference for all financial matters for WLMA and its entities;
  • Oversee and review the preparation of all programs financial reporting required for funding sources.
  • Manage the Billing, Accounts Receivable and Accounts payables functions.
  • Explore and suggest how WLMA can invest its reserves and resources to generate passive income;
  • Review short and long-term goals in light of existing and projected financial resources available;
  • Participate in all internal planning regarding WLMAs proposed entity expansions to ensure the successful and profitable execution of the company’s strategy direction.
  • Establish annual and quarterly priorities and benchmarks and conduct regular reporting, measuring projections against actual performance;
  • Generate weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports as needed to monitor, evaluate and optimize cash-flow and liquidity;
  • Build relationships with banks, vendors, outside consultants and others as needed to keep close to WLMAs major expenditures and sources of revenue;
  • Utilize technology to optimize all reporting and analytical functions;
  • Ensure that WLMA meets critical regulatory and legal compliance benchmarks;
  • Year end, GST, WCB, and T4 preparation and filings, and remittances.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, or related field
  • 10+ years of experience in accounting or finance with a minimum of 5 years of senior leadership experience in leading and developing finance functions at a fast-growing organization
  • MBA and/or a professional accreditation such as CPA designation is an asset
  • Comfortable building a business from the ground up, making decisions in the face of ambiguity (but make data-driven decisions when possible) and dealing with challenges along the way with poise
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to develop concise summaries of complex analyses and data appropriate for various levels of consumption ranging from board members to team members across the company
  • Experience overseeing complex projects through completion
  • Strategic thinker with a strong ‘business sense’
  • Leadership skills, with steadfast resolve and personal integrity
  • Proficient in the use of computers; excellent understanding of Microsoft Office applications
Key Assets:
  • Strong knowledge in Métis traditions and ways of life including harvesting by ways of hunting, trapping, fishing and plant gathering.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, rules and regulations impacting the Métis people.
Certificate/Training Requirements:
  • Valid driver’s license required.
