  • Monitors and operates Field Device Network Management Systems to ensure the overall day-to-
day optimal health of the field device communications (mesh network and distribution field devicecommunication networks) by identifying, recommending and implementing solutions such as re-balancing the mesh network and mitigating congestion of field device communications.
  • Identifies trends and develops options to improve or optimize field device mesh and distribution
field device network efficiency. Consults with the GIS mapping team to correlate router andlocation data to identify areas of communication deficiencies. Partners with the meter anddistribution devices team in the collapse and recovery of segments of the field device mesh anddistribution field device networks.
  • Analyzes a wide range of complex field devices performance and communication exceptions,
deficiencies and failures escalated through lower-level Analysts. Identifies and initiates theappropriate resolution in maintaining field device mesh and distribution field device health.Escalates potential high-impact issues and recommended solutions to Field Device MeshOperations management.
  • Monitors in real time the overall the field device communications (mesh network and distribution
field device communication network) to identify interruptions and outages. Identifies theappropriate resolution in maintaining field device mesh and distribution field device network health.
  • Identifies, recommends and implements modifications necessary to maintain the meter to
connected grid routers connectivity including activities such as configuration changes andfirmware downloads/upgrades.
  • Manages various activities to triage, provision/de-provision and configure multiple field
communication devices (such as connected grid routers). Liaises with various cross-functionaltechnical groups to complete the activities.
  • Consults with the Technology organization for changes in security procedures that impact BC
Hydro’s overall security governance such as firewall rules, IP addresses, tunnelling, routing,switching and certificate authorities.
  • Maintains communication devices including upgrading routers. Conducts initial triage testing on
faulty devices. Schedules and initiates repair and upgrade procedures. Escalatesrecommendations for router upgrades and replacement.
  • Develops and documents for management approval new and revised standard operating
procedures to ensure procedures reflect current practice, updates in software or application tools,the introduction of new technology and the appropriate resolution of issues encountered in thefield device mesh and distribution field device network. Implements approved procedures.
  • Consults with and provides technical advice to lower-level Analysts and other specialists within
FDO in the analysis and resolution of issues affecting back end field device network performance.Provides technical and subject matter expertise to project teams where connected grid routers,and other field device back end configuration are involved.
  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties that do not affect the rating of the
job.Qualifications:
  • Job knowledge is typically acquired through a university degree in Business Administration,
Computer Science, Network Science or Network Security; or three (3) years of post-secondaryeducation including a Diploma in Computer Science, plus completion of additional courses innetwork administration equivalent to an additional year of formal post-secondary education; andfour (4) years of experience in network operations, preferably within BC Hydro’s operatingenvironment.
  • Requires certification equivalent to the Cisco Certified Network Professional designation (CCNP)
and completion of BC Hydro’s in-house Electrical Fundamentals course and in-house training innetwork tools such as NMS. Requires vendor training in device upgrades and new devices as wellas operating system upgrades and their impact on core routers and back-end network functions.ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONThis position is affiliated with the Movement of United Professionals union (MoveUP/COPE).http://moveuptogether.ca
  • In this role, there is a requirement to be able to travel to our Surrey Meter Shop. Driving would
be considered an asset.
  • This role is on an Operations team, the ability to respond to callout, work both planned and
unplanned overtime, and lift up to 10 kg is required.
