Job Description

With over 130,000 residents, Ajaxs rich heritage and culturally diverse community make it a great place to work and live.Supervisor of Development ApprovalsReporting to the Manager of Planning, the Supervisor of Development Approvals is responsible for providing progressive supervision and leadership to the land use development and urban design division of the Planning Section within the Planning and Development Services department.Key Duties:

  • Supervises development planning and landscape/urban design staff, and coordinates the review, management, and approval of all development applications (official plan amendments, plans of subdivision, zoning by-law amendments, and site plans);
  • Supervises staff responsible for review, comment and/or coordination of land division, minor variance and pre-consultation applications;
  • Prepares and presents staff reports and recommendations, as well as reviews and guides staff in their preparation of staff reports, to Community Affairs and Planning Committee, General Government Committee, and Council as necessary;
  • Contributes to the preparation of the Planning Section capital and operating budgets, and contributes to the department’s development forecasting;
  • Ensures appropriate and consistent interpretation and implementation of Official Plan policy and zoning by-law provisions ;
  • Reviews and updates the Town’s Site Plan Guidelines and various Town urban design guidelines, and monitors land related activity;
  • Oversees and coordinates the preparation and implementation of Community Improvement Plans;
  • Represents the Town on various external technical and citizens advisory committees; provides planning information and professional planning advice to Council, Department Heads and their staff, agencies, landowners, the development community, and the public on complex and controversial issues;
  • Prepares for and presents evidence as an expert witness at the Ontario Land Tribunal, other tribunals and Divisional or Superior Courts, as necessary;
  • Ensures commitments under executed development agreements are fulfilled by developers;
  • Reviews employee performance, provides coaching/mentoring and conducts staff hiring.
Qualifications/Skills:
  • University degree in Planning with a minimum of six (6) years of progressive land development and planning experience and a minimum of 3 years supervisory experience or a combination of training, education and experience deemed equivalent;
  • Registered Professional Planner (RPP);
  • Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP);
  • Proven success in providing expert testimony before the Ontario Land Tribunal or Ontario Superior Court on complex planning and municipal related issues;
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written; necessary for public presentations and appearing before meetings of Council and Committees;
  • Excellent organizational, time management, problem solving and customer service skills;
  • Advanced skills in M365 (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), AMANDA, Bluebeam, Adobe, MapViewer and Laserfiche; and ability to learn new technical applications;
  • Ability to provide a current Criminal Reference Check that is satisfactory to the Town of Ajax, upong being hired.
This is a non-unionized position that works a 35 hour work week.
