Job Description

The GBGH Clinical Extern Program is an extraordinary, real-world opportunity! You will work under the direct supervision of an GBGH Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse, performing in the capacity of an assistant to the clinical team to enhance the functioning of the nursing and inter-professional team contributing to patient care. The Clinical Extern (nursing) reports within the nursing team to the identified mentor. Our Program will allow you to work as an Unregulated Health Care Worker in one of our clinical areas while gaining hands-on experience in performing fundamental patient care duties.As a Clinical Extern (nursing) you will:

  • Practice under the supervision of the Registered Nurse mentor in a manner consistent with the professional standards of the College of Nurses, while taking into account the limitations placed on the position
  • Work with the Registered Nurse mentor to ensure that the Clinical Extern has the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties.
  • Request assistance with assigned duties whenever in need
  • Report to work on all shifts assigned, or ensures that the unit manager is notified of absence prior to the start of the shift
  • Maintain patient confidentiality according to policy
  • Maintain professional accountability according to the GBGH Dress Code and Code of Conduct policies
Job Requirements:QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited School for Practical Nursing or BScN nursing program
  • Completed first year of nursing school
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
  • Proven ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Strong communication, critical thinking and organizational skills with proven ability to take initiative
  • Ability to work all shifts as necessary
  • Must have a satisfactory performance and attendance records
  • Provide assistance with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting and ambulating as per policy
  • Demonstrated commitment to our core values
Additional Information:Union: Non UnionPosting Number: 21-238Location: MidlandHours of Work: The Extern can work up to part-time or up to full-time hours (maximum 37.5 hours per week). The scheduling of these hours will be determined based on the applicants preferred hours allotment and the needs of the unit.
