Job Description

Join the senior leadership team at the Monteith Correctional Centre!We are seeking a confident leader with expert corrections knowledge to join our team and lead the overall operations of the institution.As the Deputy Superintendent, Operations, you will be responsible for the daily operation of the institution and the overall strategic and operational planning activities, including direct oversight of a team of correctional managers and staff.You will contribute to the establishment of an adaptive culture where correctional programs and operations are delivered in an integrated and coordinated manner. You will be responsible to direct, guide and supervise staff on assigned shifts to ensure and efficient operation in a correctional treatment environment. You will assume responsibility for the overall operation of the institution on evenings, nights, and weekends. You will be working with a team of peers in a 24/7 environment rotational schedules.What can I expect to do in this roleAs the Deputy Superintendent, Operations, you will:

  • Provide leadership and manage a team in the delivery of programs and services
  • Participate in the integration of programs within the institutions security framework
  • Provide direction in the planning and coordination of operations, programs and services, ensuring compliance with the institutions key performance indicators
  • Act as a liaison between the institution and offender families and various groups/agencies, and represents the institution in stakeholder negotiations and building coalitions
  • Assume responsibility for the administration of the institution during after-hours and weekends, on a rotational on-call basis

How do I qualifyLeadership and Management Skills
  • You have knowledge of and experience with management principles and theories combined with supervisory and leadership skills in order to plan, organize, direct and coordinate staff and resources to achieve a variety of program objectives
  • You can communicate performance expectations and address issues in a timely manner as well as lead change management initiatives
  • You have experience with human resource management as well as ability to establish positive union/management labour relations
  • You have good understanding of financial principles, policies, and procedures in order to prepare and manage a departmental budget, use cost management strategies, and provide prudent fiscal management
Correctional Knowledge
  • You have knowledge of the current theories, principles and practices of correctional institutions management, finance and administration including knowledge of human behaviour to provide for the care, custody, control, safety, programming and accommodation of inmates
  • You have excellent understanding of correctional policies and local standing order development and application in order to track and monitor compliance
  • You have knowledge of relevant legislation (such as the Ontario Human Rights Code, Ministry of Correctional Services Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Criminal Code, etc.) as well as ability to apply and ensure compliance with OPS policies, directives, and procedures
Investigative, Analytical, Decision-Making Skills
  • You can identify and assess the root cause of issues as well as address and resolve problems in a sound, decisive manner
  • You can assess and manage risk as well as establish and maintain appropriate internal controls and accountability
  • You have strategic planning skills in order to apply a systematic approach in the development of complex work plans to achieve organizational strategies with multiple priorities and resource requirements
  • You are able to manage effectively within an inherently stressful and challenging environment
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
  • You can articulate complex and technical concepts in terms that are easily understood by a variety of audiences
  • You are able to effectively work with all levels of staff, inmates, Ministry officials, union representatives, community agencies, local municipal officials, judiciary, etc.
  • You are able to address groups, explain programs or processes, and motivate staff
  • You have demonstrated integrity by communicating openly and directly even in difficult situations
