In collaboration with all concerned, they process and monitor all approved capital and operating budget transactions. They will also functionally supervise contract technicians as well as casual staff.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organize and supervise the day-to-day activities in the Ceramics program to ensure smooth operation, e.g.: ensure that the Ceramics facilities including equipment, studios and supply rooms are well maintained and in proper operating condition. Provide curricular project support to undergraduate and graduate students in ceramics and faculty for all technical issues associated with ceramic equipment and processes.
  • Supervise lab sessions that include training students on clay and glaze mixing equipment and firing procedures. Provide after-class support for glaze chemistry, clay forming techniques such as hand building and slip casting, as well as firings in gas, electric and raku kilns.
  • Order equipment and materials; manage the stock of materials and keep an inventory.
  • Functionally supervise the work of contract technicians and casual staff.
  • Establish safe working procedures to ensure that proper care and attention is taken in the preparation of ceramic materials, working methods and equipment usage.
  • Supervise and instruct faculty, staff, and students on gas and electric firing equipment, such as Cone Art and Blaauw Kilns. Program firing schedules, supervise firing activities, such as loading, unloading and monitoring firing calendars.
  • In consultation with faculty, manage and is accountable for budgets, sales of materials and petty cash for the Ceramics program.
  • Conceive of designs and oversee the installation of new specialized equipment when required.
  • Resolve material issues for studio clays and glazes, materials and methods for program use.
  • Instruct students and staff in the proper use of ceramic studio equipment and supplies.
  • Implement and maintain the WHMIS system, update all MSDS and label all toxic materials. Manage hazardous material use in studios and workshops. Ensure chemical inventory compliance requirements by monitoring databases.
  • In collaboration with all concerned, inform students and faculty of rules and regulations governing health and safety within the University. Instruct in the operation of equipment in the Ceramics program and enforce adherence to safety regulations and proper practices in the Ceramic studios.
  • Evaluate and attempt to resolve Ceramics facility issues, carry out minor repairs and calibrate equipment.
  • Coordinate and contact the appropriate personnel within Maintenance Operations, Security, Cleaning Services, Health & Safety, Fire Safety and other Maintenance Service Units and submit request for work order repairs for the Ceramic studios.
  • Participate in new and ongoing capital and other minor and major renovations and refurbishment projects within the studios.
  • Functionally supervise the work of contract technicians and casual staff.
  • Cultivate a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment in Ceramics studios.
  • Perform other duties as required by the functional and line supervisor.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Diploma of Collegial Studies (3 year technical DEC) and four years of relevant experience or Bachelors degree in Studio Arts/Ceramics or a relevant discipline and two (2) years of relevant work experience.
  • Understanding of ceramic studio processes and the ability to use technical equipment (e.g. kilns).
  • Working knowledge of studio health and safety regulations, best practices and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
  • Excellent organizational & interpersonal skills.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English in order to assist/instruct and to write procedures and instructions. Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken French in order to provide basic information to students.
  • Experience with Ceramics processes and techniques including: clay mixing, glaze chemistry, clay forming, slip casting, firing in gas, electric and raku kilns.
  • Basic knowledge of Word (to create documents) and Excel (to input data). Ability to work with Outlook.
  • Knowledge of SAP, Concur, and Ariba for budget monitoring, Web Requisitioning, P-Card systems for purchasing/reconciliation purposes, and expense claim submissions; Maximo for Facilities Management Work Order processing and a working/educational knowledge within a studio arts production environment will be considered important assets.
  • Availability and ability to, if and when required, work outside normal working hours.
