Job Description

We encourage all qualified persons who share our values and want to contribute to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace to apply.The Emergency Response Team (ERT) is activated for responses that exceed personal disaster assistance capacity. The incumbent of this position will be assigned to deliver specific services on site or by alternate means during a response, however, must know how to deliver all services at the ERT level and adapt when assignments change due to shifts in operational needs and priorities. ERT Responders may also be called to support large-scale catastrophic events outside of their community, as required and available.In this role, you will:Responsibility 1. Emergency Response

  • Assist in the set up, running and/or closing of a service within a reception and information centre, shelter site and/or commercial lodging operation, service centre or another site as directed by the Supervisor;
  • Conduct assessments to determine needs of beneficiaries as appropriate;
  • Provide appropriate services as assigned, based on CRC Standards and Guidelines;
  • Communicate and report on progress, as appropriate, to the assigned Supervisor;
  • Provide comfort to beneficiaries and provide referrals to partner agencies and other community groups as appropriate;
  • Contribute toward the establishment of safe & secure working environments and spaces supporting different populations and incorporating cultural considerations;
  • Work with Safety and Wellbeing (SWB) personnel on complex or urgent needs, referral mechanisms, and community-based support structures as required;
  • Support team cohesion and service delivery by mentoring less experienced volunteers on site as appropriate and as assigned;
  • Collaborate with support functions within an operation and assist support service personnel when and as needed;
  • Complete necessary written or electronic documentation and follows record keeping procedures according to CRC standards and processes;
  • Maintain timely and accurate data base records and responsible for filing program records as directed;
  • Follow established procedures with accurate attention to detail;
  • Perform office administrative duties as required such as data entry and document scanning as required;
  • Punctually participate in and contribute to planned internal briefings/debriefings and meetings as requested through in-person, virtual and other means of participation.
Responsibility 2. Preparedness Activities
  • Actively engage in team preparedness activities including emergency planning, exercises and kit preparedness;
  • Attend meetings and participate in local awareness/engagement activities, as requested;
  • Support ERT Supervisor in materials/inventory management, as needed;
  • Support the ERT Supervisor in planning and organizing services;
  • Participate in volunteer engagement or recruitment activities, as requested;
What we are looking for:
  • A degree or diploma in a social service or other relevant discipline is preferred but not required; 1-3 years experience in customer service, community development, or social services; or a suitable combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in an emergency environment, and/or knowledge of Red Cross role in disaster response, relief and recovery, an asset.
  • Language – responders must be able to deliver services as appropriate in English or French;
  • Customer Service Skills – provide comfort and care, patience in dealing with upset clients, active listening to understanding needs, finding a solution and good communication so client understands services available and how to obtain
  • Communication skills - verbal and non-verbal cues, active listening, clearly able explain self and confirm understanding from client
  • Attention to detail - accuracy in completing forms, giving information, completing necessary paperwork
  • Data entry: able to work at a high level of accuracy, speed and confidence in the applicable data bases, Excel and other computer applications;
  • Ability to work well within a team - share information, be helpful, respectful, approachable, build strong relationships
  • Dependable - Timely, takes initiative and ownership of work, completes tasks without being asked or with little supervision
  • Remain calm during a crisis - Don’t allow emotions to get in the way, don’t take things personal, stay positive, respond decisively
Working conditions:
  • The majority of the response work is performed in an adapted response environment which is moderately clean and comfortable. The majority of preparedness work is performed in an office environment which is mostly clean and comfortable.
  • Able to work non-traditional hours (daytime, evenings and weekends), be on-call and respond to emergency/disaster related requests
  • Ability to respond in local community and outside of their community. In exceptional circumstances, ERT Responders may be asked to deploy to a large-scale response in Canada, as required and available, anywhere from 3 to 21 days.
  • Potential for responding in disaster areas, as well as difficult and unstable conditions (environmental, physical, social, etc.) and uncomfortable conditions (noise, odours, smoke, humidity, vulnerable beneficiaries). These stressful rapidly changing environments with limited information to make decisions have the potential to affect the physical and psychological state of the responders on site.
  • If working in a response site, health and safety considerations will be outlined prior to the assignment.
  • If driving for society business; a valid drivers license is required with a satisfactory drivers’ abstract.
